Now that the High School season has concluded I would like to breakdown the top players in each class by position to help give insight on whats to come in our new player rankings!
Taymon Burrola Taymon Burrola 6'3" | SG Roswell | 2021 State NM : One of the best scorers in the state, (25 ppg), is also a solid playmaker, and defender ending the season with averages of 4 assists and 3 steals per game. Taymon secured a regular season district championship, and led Roswell to a Final Four appearance narrowly losing to Las Cruces by four points. He was named district player of the year, and will be in the conversation for 1st team All-State. The 6’3 guard has not committed to a college, but I expect a few division 2 programs to be knocking at his door throughout this summer.
Cody Garcia Cody Garcia 5'11" | SG Santa Fe | 2021 State NM : Over the course of this season Garcia showed that he is more and more comfortable with the ball in his hands. The deadly outside shooter can now help run a teams offense, while also creating for others off of the dribble. He was selected to the All District 1st team, and helped Santa Fe capture another district title, and the 8 seed in this years playoffs before eventually falling to Cleveland. A bit undersized, but can definitely play at the next level whether that be division 2/3, NAIA, or JUCO.
Josiah Navarro Josiah Navarro 6'0" | SG Los Lunas | 2021 State NM , Los Lunas: Josiah and Los Lunas had a mission this season to prove that they are more than ready to compete at the 5A level. They not only proved that the Tigers can compete, but Navarro helped lead them to a co-district championship and the 6 seed in this years playoffs before losing a close battle to Las Cruces. He finished the season averaging more than 17 points, and is in consideration for player of the year in his district.
Nathan Hasberry Nathan Hasberry 6'3" | SG Cleveland | 2021 State NM , Cleveland: Hasberry is a borderline division 1 talent in my opinion. He has improved his guard skills immensely over the past years developing a more consistent shot, while also improving his ball handling and playmaking ability. He’s officially transformed from a small forward to a shooting guard, and at 6’3 he has the size to play at the division 1 level. It should be interesting to see what he decides in the future as he currently holds offers from the local schools here in New Mexico, but could garner some division 1 interest if he were to take a post grad year.
Junior Hodnett Junior Hodnett 6'2" | SG Rio Rancho | 2021 State NM , Rio Rancho: Junior has been making major contributions for the Rams lineup since he was a sophomore, and this year was finally his season to take over as the man! He finished the season with averages of ______, and was selected to his districts 1st team. He unfortunately missed the playoffs in this short season, but it will be fun to watch him play at Eastern New Mexico University this coming fall!
Ivan Bernal Ivan Bernal 6'2" | SG Alamogordo | 2021 NM , Alamogordo: Bernal was the biggest sleeper this season! Standing at 6’2 the dynamic guard continuously produced near triple doubles throughout the season leading Alamogordo to a 10-2 record. He was selected to the all-district 1st team, and proved go be one of the most versatile players in the state! I hope to see him playing at the next level, because he has a lot to offer to any program!
