CIF playoffs are finally here, later than usual but here nonetheless. Here’s a look at some players in the City Section Open Division to keep an eye on as they get underway this week.
1. Kosy Akametu – King/Drew 2021
One of the best unsigned seniors in SoCal, Akametu had a real big showing during the winter and early spring periods playing AAU ball. He’s got good size for a wing and is comfortable handling the ball and making plays off the dribble. Whether he’s attacking the rim or shooting off the bounce, he’s become a solid offensive threat who has range out to the three-point line. He’s an explosive athlete too who is aggressive at the rim and looking to throw it down. Solid defensive wing too.
2. Devean Williams – Narbonne 2021
Another one of LA’s top unsigned seniors, Williams also used strong AAU play in the winter to really put his name on the map. He’s a combo guard who is very unselfish and has great court vision. He’s constantly looking for his teammates for easy buckets. He’s an explosive scorer too, he gets himself to the rim and can finish strong, drawing contact and getting himself to the free-throw line. Good shooter from outside too. Great leader.
3. TJ Wainwright TJ Wainwright 6'3" | SG Westchester | 2021 State CA-S – Westchester 2021
Wainwright is another top unsigned senior who does have a few Division 1 offers. He’s helped lead Westchester to an undefeated regular season. He’s always been a sharpshooter from distance, but he’s really expanded his game too as he’s come through his high school career. He’s a capable ball-handler who can get to the rim and finish, and he can see the floor and find open teammates. Can light it up from anywhere on the court
4. Barry Wilds Barry Wilds 5'11" | CG Fairfax | 2021 State CA-S Jr – Fairfax 2021
Wilds is a player who plays much bigger than his size. He’s a very tough minded guard and he looks to make the right play whether it’s a pass or looking to shoot. He can shoot consistently from both the midrange and from the three-point line. Good playmaker who can find his open teammates. He may be a small guard, but he’s always had a good motor on the glass, he can sneak in and crashing the boards against bigger players.
