A mix of rural schools and small private schools provides an interesting dynamic within the conference with a vast variance in the styles of basketball that are played. A lot of the smaller private schools have a handful of solid players that they run the majority of their offense through while the rural teams often look to one or two star players on the team to carry the offensive weight. Continue reading for a look at the top players from the 2A Western Idaho All-Conference team.
Joe Reiber Joe Reiber 6'2" | SG Melba | 2022 State ID , Melba: The conference player of the year had an excellent personal season for Melba. Reiber was a walking double-double night in and night out and he did a little bit of everything for the mustangs. As only a junior, Joe did a great job of finishing at the rim or snagging an offensive rebound and a put back. From outside, the lefty proved to be a very consistent shooter with extended range. Joe’s senior season has the potential to be a very impressive display as he looks to lead Melba to the state tournament.
Johnny Sugarman Johnny Sugarman 6'0" | PG Ambrose | 2022 State ID , Ambrose: Sugarman was a key part of an Ambrose squad that nearly completed another state championship run. Johnny was sidelined for a part of the season due to injury but he had a huge impact when he was healthy and on the floor. Sugarman has tight handles and is a commanding floor general. He knows where everyone should be on the floor and does a great job of getting his teammates involved. Additionally, Sugarman can score at all three levels and will look to be an even more aggressive scorer next season.
Jacob Ankeny Jacob Ankeny 6'8" | C Marsing | 2021 State ID , Marsing: Ankeny had a tough ending to his senior season after being in first place heading into the district tournament and then failing to make the state tournament. Personally, Jacob had a stellar season and was able to score and rebound at a high level. Ankeny’s energy on both ends of the floor led the team to the first place spot in their conference but his efforts were not enough to make a run at state.
