As the season winds down for most of these teams, the competition heats up heading into the conference tournament with a bid to the state tournament viewed as the ultimate prize. With many multi-sport athletes on these rosters, players here are very athletic, strong, and do not taking losing lightly. Though personally, I would not want to live anywhere near this area, the Canyon Conference is definitely a sweet spot for great basketball and lovely gyms. Continue reading for a look at the top players from the 2A Canyon All-Conference team.
Omar Campos, Valley: Campos had a great year for Valley as the heart and soul of the team on both ends of the court. Campos frequently converted steals on the defensive end into fast break opportunities and layups or kick out three’s on the offensive end. Campos is a strong player who can bully his way to the rim and loved to finish through contact with the chance to knock down some easy baskets at the free throw line.
Zane Kelsey, Wendell: Zane is a dominant shooter who uses his quick release and size to shoot over the top of smaller defenders. There is no such thing as a bad shot for him and he can heat up in a hurry. If he skips the three, Kelsey is a magnificent finisher at the rim with both hands. Zane is 6’3″ and uses all of that length to his advantage. On defense, he can easily swipe the ball away from poor ball handlers or dive through passing lanes for easy steals.
Sam Nebeker, Declo: Sam is a beast in the boast and uses all of his size and strength to his advantage. A tremendous offensive rebounder, Nebeker is tough to get around once he has a defender sealed and he is always there in the correct position to clean up any shot coming off of the iron. Sam has great touch around the rim and excellent footwork on his post moves. As Sam continues to extend his range, he could be a scary player to try and guard from anywhere on the floor.
