The AAU season is a perfect time for them to raise their stocks further as they will have the opportunity to play in front of college coaches. Some players are ready for the next step, which could propel their stocks up and prepare them for their sophomore seasons. Here are the 2024 prospects who should take a big step up this AAU season.
Philip Unangst Philip Unangst 6'6" | SF Hillsborough | 2024 State NJ , 6’6 SF/PF St. Thomas Aquinas
Unangst had his freshman season cut short due to injury, but he has a chance to make up for lost time with the Hilltoppers. The 6’6 forward has long arms which allows him to defend multiple positions on the floor. Unangst has a nice touch around the basket and knows how to draw contact. He is also comfortable playing on the perimeter and his range extends past the three-point line. Unangst will be given a bigger role in the Trojans’ offense next season and his work this AAU season can help him prepare for that.
Jaylan Hornsby, 6’3 SG Overbrook
Hornsby had a great freshman season for the Rams and should expand upon it with the NJ Scholars. The 6’3 guard is at his best attacking the basket as he can finish in a variety of ways and does not mind contact. Hornsby is more than just a slasher as he is capable of knocking down open jumpers from distance. He is a strong rebounder and a tough on-ball defender as he finished with five games with at least five steals. Hornsby’s two-way play gives him the potential to rise up rankings and run Overbrook’s offense next season.
Mike Jones Jr., PG Trenton Catholic
Jones Jr. played a key role in the Iron Mikes’ attack and has built upon that so far with Team Final. He is confident with the ball in his hands and has a tight handle. Jones Jr. is a crafty finisher around the basket and is unafraid of contact. He is more than just a slasher as he can bury jumpers from distance and is a good passer. Jones Jr. is a talented lead guard who should be a player to watch as the AAU season progresses.
Alex Konov Alex Konov 6'7" | PF Manasquan | 2024 State NJ , 6’7 PF Wildwood Catholic
Konov may be flying under the radar now, but he will not be for long after suiting up for Team Rio University this AAU season. The 6’7 forward is quite comfortable playing on the perimeter and has a nice release on his shot. Konov can also put the ball on the floor and finish around the basket. He moves well off the ball and is an underrated passer. Konov’s shooting ability is something that will help his game moving forward.
Dean Smith Dean Smith 6'2" | CG Watchung Hills | 2024 State NJ , 5’11 CG Watchung Hills
Smith has had a strong start to his AAU season with Hoop Heaven Hawks Elite as he has been able to show his complete game. The 5’11 guard has a good handle and is able to finish around the rim. Smith is more than just a driver as he makes good decisions with the ball in his hands and does not waste motion in his jumper. He is always talking on the defensive end and rarely takes a play off. Smith is a tough guard prospect who should see his stock rise as the summer goes along.
