I got to watch a lot of 16u games this weekend, and was so impressed with the talent I saw that I had to form an All-Tournament team to highlight all of the special players at the event! Here is a look at the top combo-guards I watched in the 16u division last weekend!
CG 6’3 Dylan Chavez Dylan Chavez 6'5" | SG La Cueva | 2024 State #268 Nation NM , 2024, D1 New Mexico: Dylan is a flat out scorer, the kid consistently put up 20+ points per game throughout the weekend, and does it from all three levels! He has good range on his jump shot, and is a very creative mid-range shotmaker with a variety of turn around and pull-up jumpers to complement his floater. He is transitioning into more of a playmaker, and I saw him play with the ball in his hands a lot more this weekend. He is becoming more explosive throwing down dunks in transition with relative ease. One of the top 2024s in the Southwest!
CG 6’2 Christian Drummond Christian Drummond 6'2" | CG Doherty | 2023 State CO , 2023, Pluto Prospects: I was very intrigued with Drummond’s play this weekend. He has long arms and a lot of potential on the defensive end and when he was locked in, was the difference-maker. Staying consistent is key. He is a system guy that helps run the team’s offense to perfection, and took a lot of smart shots, mostly attacking the basket and finishing at the rim.
SG 6’5 Carter Gittens Carter Gittens 6'5" | SF Sunrise Mountain | 2023 State AZ , 2023, AZ Factory: Gittens was one of the top scorers in the entire event, and easily averaged around 20 points per game. He’s smooth and efficient with the ball, rarely over dribbling. He can knock down catch and shoot threes, has a mid-range jumper off the dribble, can post up smaller guards, and is a solid slasher from the wing! He helped AZ Factory to a 3-1 record this weekend.
CG 6’0 Davis Hester Davis Hester 6'0" | SG Liberty | 2023 State AZ , 2023, AZ Factory: Hester was arguably the best shooter in the 16u division at the Hustle in the Sun, he knocked down 6 threes in a game. He has a smooth stoke with deep range, and is a solid playmaker. He plays more off of the ball for Factory, but was able to handle pressure in the backcourt for stretches.
SG 6’4 Tru Washington Tru Washington 6'3" | CG AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State #61 Nation AZ , 2023, AZ Select UAA: “Tru” was the best player I saw in the 16u division all weekend, and easily the Most Outstanding Player. The gifted scorer can light it up from all three levels, and did so all weekend! He beat defenders off the dribble, consistently avoided help-side defenders, and finished everything at the rim. His coach did an excellent job of drawing up mid-range catch and shoot opportunities, and he capitalized on those shots.
CG 6’3 Emery Young Emery Young 6'4" | SG Centennial | 2023 State AZ , 2023, AZ Select UAA: Young gave a huge spark for a loaded AZ Select UAA squad all weekend long off of the bench. He can beat his defender off the dribble pretty consistently, and tends to make the right basketball play whether that’s finding the open man or taking the open shot!
