Continue ReadingYesterday we released our updated 2022 player rankings and as always, a slew of content will follow throughout the week breaking down the different prospects who made the top 100. As we take a look a different aspects of the rankings, I’ll focus on the Baltimore prospects going by positions. We start with the point guards.
Christian Winborne Christian Winborne 6'2" | CG Gilman | 2022 State #199 Nation MD | Gilman
Ranking: No. 6
Positional Ranking: No. 1
Winborne wins the argument as the state’s top point guard and for good reason. He brings a tremendous sense of balance to the floor both as a scorer and distributor. This season for Gilman, he had to take on much more of a scoring role and came through by averaging 21.5 points while dishing out five assists per game. He’s a true three-level scorer who can operate in almost any situation in an efficient manner. Winborne is a stout defender who will accept guarding the other team’s best perimeter option. As mentioned earlier, Gilman was a very young team and Winborne was responsible for being the player that truly made everyone else go. If Winborne didn’t perform at a high level, they wouldn’t be in a position to win. He’s also a high-level performer in the classroom, which is why programs such as Northwestern, Harvard and Yale are recruiting him aggressively.
Bryce Lindsay Bryce Lindsay 6'2" | CG St. Frances | 2022 State MD | Poly
Ranking: No. 10
Positional Ranking: No. 2
Poly didn’t have a regular season this winter due to COVID forcing Maryland Public Schools to cancel their season, but in the time that Lindsay got on the court in other scenarios with his Poly teammates, he was featured as a point guard. He has good size at 6-foot-3 and is one of the purest three-point shooters you’ll find in the mid-Atlantic region. He showcased his underrated passing skills and feel for the game as the primary ball-handler, which ultimately helped raise his stock and give him a bump in the rankings. It’ll be interesting to see how he fares with Team Melo on the EYBL Circuit this spring/summer after a productive one with Team Thrill last year.
Deon Perry Deon Perry 5'8" | PG Mt. Carmel | 2022 State MD | Mt. Carmel
Ranking: No. 16
Positional Ranking: No. 5
Perry had an exceptional junior season as he engineered the Cougars to a 12-4 overall record. He led them to a BCL semifinal appearance while eclipsing the 1000-point mark in the shortened season. Perry has an advanced feel for the game and it wouldn’t surprise me that with a big spring for Team Melo that he could make a serious push for the No. 1 spot at his position. He’s a flamethrower from three both off the bounce or off the catch, is extremely quick/shifty with the ball and makes split-second reads that every coach needs in their lead guard. Defensively he’s active both on and off the ball, always swiping at the ball-handler or playing the passing lanes trying to generate deflections and turnovers to get transition opportunities sparked for his team. Schools tend to shy away because of his 5-foot-8 frame, but trust and believe that Perry can produce at the low major Division I level and possibly higher.
Tyheil Peterson Tyheil Peterson 5'10" | PG Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State MD | Archbishop Spalding
Ranking: No. 50
Positional Ranking: No. 12
Peterson had a real argument to be in the Most Improved Player conversation for the BCL this season with his steady production for the No. 2 12-3 Cavaliers. Next to our No. 1 ranked prospect in the 2022 class, Cameron Whitmore Cameron Whitmore 6'7" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State #30 Nation MD , Peterson established himself as a consistent secondary option offensively and even had nights where he carried the torch in that regard. He can play on or off the ball, but is a tough matchup even for the quickest guards because of his threat to score from all three levels. He can get into the paint, create contact and knock down free-throws to get others in foul trouble. Off the ball he can act as a spot-up shooter from beyond the arc or he can operate in ball-screens and is improving with his reads off the live dribble. He’s a capable defender who doesn’t hesitate to get on the floor for 50/50s or give up his body to draw charges after making weakside rotations.
TJ Vaughn TJ Vaughn 5'10" | PG John Carroll | 2022 State MD | John Carroll
Ranking: No. 71
Positional Ranking: No. 18
Vaughn established himself as the starting point guard for the Patriots and was the floor general in their efforts of upsetting the undefeated No. 1 St. Frances Panthers in the BCL title game. The 5-foot-10 lefty didn’t blow up the scoring column by any means, but he hit timely three’s throughout their nine-game winning streak to end their season. What he did do consistently was control the pace of the game and act as a table-setter for the number of scorers in the John Carroll rotation. The Patriots quickly built a reputation of being an elite rebounding team at both ends and it extended all the way down to their guards. Vaughn showed a willingness to buy-in and became one of the more impressive rebounders at his position by crashing and getting scrappy.
Jalen Marshall Jalen Marshall 6'0" | PG Gilman | 2022 State MD | Gilman
Ranking: No. 77
Positional Ranking: No. 21
Marshall and Winborne split the ball-handling duties for the 7-7 Hounds this season. The 5-foot-11 guard is a downhill threat at all times, but showed progressions as a mid-range shooter off the dribble. He’s a versatile defender who provides toughness at that end. I’ve seen Marshall guard either backcourt position and even wings with success. He’s a guard who can impact the box score in multiple ways and although his overall skillset still needs significant polish, his pure energy and effort allow him to stand out for this Gilman team.
