I was in attendance for Saturday’s slate of games where I caught plenty of talent from various classes. This week I’ll be breaking down the different prospects that stood out among the rest starting with the 2024 guards.
Daquan Davis Daquan Davis 6'1" | PG Overtime Elite (GA) | 2024 #119 Nation GA | 6’0 | Team Thrill
Davis is coming off a productive freshman season with St. Frances where he played a critical role off the bench. In one of the more thrilling games of Saturday’s slate, Thrill faced off against Team Takeover in a battle that lived up to the Baltimore/DC rivalry. Davis struggled to find his footing in the first half, but recovered with a monster second-half performance where he hit timely three’s, made strong drives to the rim and pushed in transition. Defensively he was a pest all game and generated multiple turnovers with active hands. He’s an outstanding rebounder for his position and never hesitates to battle with the bigs for offensive or defensive boards.
Ben Hammond | 5’8 | Team Takeover
The lineage of point guards to come through Paul IV is impressive to say the least. Hammond seems to be the next special one as the 5-foot-8 floor general controlled the game for his team in the win over Thrill. Hammond is a quick-twitch guard who can get into the paint with regularity and brings balance as a scorer and distributor. He guarded the ball effectively without fouling and set a tone with his leadership when the game got tight.
Chance Mallory | 5’8 | Team Thrill
Mallory was outstanding as a shooter in the loss against Thrill. He was efficient with his opportunities and buried three’s both off the catch or off the dribble. Two of his makes were well beyond the three-point line. Late in the game, Thrill could’ve used his presence and his shooting on the floor to have a chance at changing the final outcome of this contest.
Isaiah Williams Isaiah Williams 6'3" | CG Rosedale Christian | 2024 MD | 6’2 | Team Thrill
Williams was the most consistent presence for Thrill throughout this game. The 6-foot-2 combo guard is a fearless driver and isn’t afraid to challenge bigs at the rim as they contest his layups. His quick first step gives him an advantage on his defender and it usually results with him getting into the paint where he’ll attack the rim or draw a foul on the way. Williams was also impressive on the defensive end with his anticipation off the ball causing deflections.
Tavarres Riley | 5’10 | Team Takeover
Next to Hammond in the backcourt for Takeover was Riley, who also attends Paul IV and shows promise as a strong prospect. The 5-foot-10 combo guard made the majority of his plays in transition where he showcased willingness to throw advance passes as soon as his eyes scanned the floor. He had a handful of good drives to the rim where he finished despite being challenged by the Thrill bigs. Riley also made a couple of big hustle plays late in the game to secure extra possessions for his team.
