Here’s a look at some of the top 15U ball handlers in KC last weekend (in alphabetical order):
Blake Forrest, 5-foot-9 guard, Team Lavine 3SSB, Mount Si HS:
Forrest was faster with the ball than anyone else at Kansas City. He could turn on the jets and get past a defender or through traffic like no one else. He scored a lot by getting down the court quicker than defenses were able to set up. He is confident when heavily guarded and keeps his head up to make sure he’s getting the ball to open shooters on time.
Colby Kiedrowski, 5-foot-7 guard, Between the Lines, Park Hill HS:
The KC guard was smooth and confident with the ball in his hometown. He has a great knack for keeping his head up and eyes surveying the court while probing for opportunities. He uses his body to protect the ball, and in a flash he can penetrate to create his own shot or to knock a defense out of whack to free up a shooter. He is quick from end to end and physical enough to get through traffic.
Jesse Ledbetter, 6-foot guard, Team Buddy Buckets, Southmoore HS:
Ledbetter is a long, lean point guard who slithers through crowds and uses his body to cut defenders off once he gets a step on them. He’s a smooth ball handler who can use his top gear to get from the perimeter to the hole in the blink of an eye. He’s a score-first point guard who creates a ton of points on the break.
Grayson Okoronkwo, 6-foot-1 guard, D1 Minnesota-Williams:
Okoronkwo is a powerfully built guard who uses his strength to dribble through physical defense. Hand checks and bumps by on-ball defenders don’t slow him down. Once he gets going to the hole, he has great quickness and can get where he wants. He was pretty much flawless handling the ball to set up the offense of the only club to go undefeated in Pool A.
Xon Williams, 6-foot-2 guard, Oklahoma Basketball Club, Edmond Memorial:
Williams came up huge for OBC, turning his ball handling into a lot of scoring opportunities. He is good at pushing the ball up the court and finding teammates with passes ahead. Once in the half court, he can break down a defender with either hand. He made some acrobatic shots off the drive and showed off an nice floater on penetration.
