Continue ReadingThe COVID-19 pandemic has done a number on recruiting, especially in the Garden State. The state’s top player Trey Patterson Trey Patterson 6'7" | SF Rutgers Prep | 2021 State #36 Nation NJ graduated early from Rutgers Prep to enroll early at Villanova. He was not the only wing to make a decision before the start of the season as Dumont forward Dominick Barlow Dominick Barlow 6'7" | SF Dumont | 2022 NLG announced that he would be doing a postgrad year.
The 6’7 wing was absolutely dominant for the Huskies this season with six games of at least 28 points, including a 38-20 game. Barlow’s stock has been skyrocketing since the summer as he showed his ability to affect the game in multiple ways. He currently holds four D1 offers and that list should grow with a postgrad season.
Josh Rivera is another prospect who announced before the season that he would do a postgrad season. The 6’7 forward had a big-time final season for St. Thomas Aquinas as he topped the team in scoring and rebounding, including a streak of four straight games with a double-double. Rivera has the ability to play either the three or the four at the next level, which makes his stock even more valuable.
Jerome Brewer and Kunga Tsering Kunga Tsering 6'6" | SF Woodstock Academy | 2022 State NLG are both doing postgrad seasons, but they had vastly different 2021 seasons. The former has been a key member of Camden’s success over the past three seasons as he led the High in scoring in his sophomore season. Brewer can score in a variety of ways and should put that on display at Taylor Made in Arizona for his postgrad year.
Tsering was dominant for Hasbrouck Heights, before he transferred to Roselle Catholic for his senior season. The 6’7 combo forward had a limited role for a talented Lions’ roster, but he should be able to break out in his postgrad season. Tsering is a strong rebounder and can put the ball on the floor, making him a postgrad to keep an eye on.
Shooting guards Isaiah Hill Isaiah Hill 6'3" | CG We Believe | 2022 State NLG and Donavin Crawford Donavin Crawford 6'3" | SG Nottingham | 2021 State NJ are still available and will make a difference in separate ways. The former is an athletic scorer who puts up points in bunches and loves to finish above the rim. His career might be away from the hardwood as he is currently in the middle of filming the show “Swagger,” according to his IMDb page.
Crawford transferred into Nottingham from Trenton Catholic before the start of his senior season and made an immediate impact. The 6’3 guard has a nice shooting stroke, but can also put the ball on the floor and finish around the rim. Crawford is athletic enough to defend both guard spots and is an underrated passer.
Kareem Ewell Kareem Ewell 6'6" | SF Olympus Prep | 2022 State NJ is the highest rated available small forward in the class and he had big moments in his only season with the Patrick School. The Delaware native buried a pair of free throws late in the game to beat Hun and hit the game-winning layup against Roselle Catholic. Ewell’s ability to hit clutch shots down the stretch is something that cannot be taught and should provide him an opportunity to make an impact early in his college career.
The 2021 wing class has been through a lot this recruiting cycle, but the group is filled with players who can make an impact at the next level.
