I wanted to pay close attention to see how the Indy natives faired against some of the top talent the country had to offer. Here are the Indiana native performers who raised their stock in the 17u division.
Amhad Jarrard Amhad Jarrard 6'4" | SG Mt. Vernon-Fortville | 2022 State IN 6’4 G George Hill All Indy- Saunders 2022 (2022)
The Mt Vernon guard is is always in attack mode. Looking to score from every area on the floor. Jarrard has a cat quick first step and before you know it, he’s up in the air, throwing it down on whoever is under the rim. He had poster dunks on defenders head in every game I watched this weekend. But with the athleticism he brings a smooth handle, able to create space with snatch backs and get into his pull up jumper effectively when defenders give him space playing the drive. On the defensive end, Amhad with his speed and length is an nightmare for guards on the perimeter. He speeds players up causing them to commit turnovers, resulting in run outs where he punishes the rim. The guard has a great attitude and plays till the whistle every play, as I watched him lead his team back from a double digit deficit late in the game off of pure will and skill. Jarrard is poised for a breakout summer and I expect him to have multiple new looks by the end of July. Amhad is currently ranked 15th in his 2022 class.
Jahni Summers Jahni Summers 6'5" | SG Evansville Harrison | 2022 State IN 6’5 SG George Hill All Indy Smith 2022 (2022)
Whether it’s off the dribble or the catch, the Evansville Harrison sniper is marksmen with a very smooth all around game. He has a nice handle, paired with his height and elevation when he jumps, makes it very difficult to contest his shot. Summers gets right into his smooth shot after he creates space, and he will pull up from 25+ ft if you don’t stay up on him. Jahni plays with a great confidence you would want your scorer to have as a coach. His midrange pull up was effortless all weekend, and you can tell he has put the reps in. Despite having such a sure jumper, he is not one dimensional. Getting low, ripping through, and getting to the rim where he finishes well and will dunk in traffic. On the defensive end, Summers takes the lead. Guarding the best opposing player whether he is a guard or a wing. I watched Summers frustrate defenders with his length, stripping them when they put the ball out too far. When teams key in on him, he is a willing playmaker and passer. The guard gets into traffic where he has easy drop offs to his big for assists. With his skill and talent along with the circuit his team is on, coaches will know his name very soon if he’s not on their radars already. Jahni is currently ranked 52nd in the class of 2022.
Sean Black Sean Black 5'10" | PG Warren Central | 2021 State IN 5’11 PG George Hill All Indy Smith 2022 (2021)
Sean is an unsigned Senior and it shows in his poise and strength in his game. The Warren Central guard has a speed and strength on both sides of the ball that a coach can use in the upcoming year. He is proven scorer at the rim, using his strength and body control to finish through contact amongst the trees. His improved jumper was shown this weekend, as he took and hit shots with confidence from behind the arc. Black has put the work in and scored in all ares on the floor. He picks up guards 94 ft all game, playing with the energy and that dog that a coach would want in the leader on his team. His playmaking ability is what caught my eye the most. Sean’s ability to hit a speed gear that defenders aren’t ready for while still being able to stay poised, deliver the ball on time and target to teammates, putting them in position to score. The quick guard showed his ability to turn made buckets into transition buckets on the other end with his speed and passing ability time after time. Before teams were set he was right on top of them looking to pass for an open shot, or past them scoring at the rim while they jogged back. He can help a program out no question and come June he will have a home. Sean is ranked 56th in the 2021 class.
Ryan Conwell Ryan Conwell 6'2" | SG Pike | 2022 State #155 Nation IN 6’2 PG EG10 2022 (2022)
The lefty Pike guard is crafty, getting into comfortable positions to score all weekend. Conwell plays with a poise and evenness that stands out in a crowd. He never gets too high or too low regardless of the situation. He uses his body with his tight handle to get wherever he needs on there court. I watched as he used his change of speed and array of moves with his quickness and footwork to get into the teeth of the defense and control the game. He is a player that if he has the ball in his hands, the right play will be made. I witnessed that first hand as he made a game tying three at the buzzer to send a game into OT, capping his late game surge. He has a great midrange game, ripping through quickly and getting to his midrange pull up with his quick release. Ryan can really shoot it, showing the smooth left-hand stroke off the catch or dribble from distance. He can score from every level on the floor, as I watched him get in the low post to post up smaller guards as well. He has a very complete offensive game and he uses it all to be effective. He has had a great summer so far and this weekend was no different. Ryan is currently ranked 24th for the class of 2022.
