The ‘bigs’ category at small schools tends to encompass guys with guard skills just because of their height. Tyler Little Tyler Little 6'5" | PF Galena | 2023 State KS , for instance, is an elite 6-foot-5 athlete who does it all for Galena. Or it might be a smaller guy who thrives on the hard work in the lane.
Aside from Little, here are a few ‘bigs’ worth watching this spring:
Landon Boss Landon Boss 6'1" | SF Osage City | 2023 State KS , Osage City:
Boss plays much bigger than his 6-foot-1 frame. He knows how to work in the lane and gets a lot of tough guy-type of hoops. He’s a multi-sport athlete who had a lot of big games for the Redskins. It will be interesting to see how his game translates to club action.
Brett Hamilton, Columbus:
The 6-foot-3 Hamilton had a nice sophomore year, with 12.2 points and 3.9 boards. Like so many kids in southeast Kansas, he’s making his mark on the football field and the baseball diamond. He’s an athlete who might just be too busy a lot of summer basketball. It will be interesting to see where he devotes his time, and what he can do.
Eli Sawyers Eli Sawyers 6'7" | SF Southeast Of Saline | 2023 State KS , Southeast of Saline (pictured):
The 6-foot-5 Sawyers grabbed a lot of attention on the club scene last year, and he’s sure to do the same again this spring. He had a solid season for the Trojans with 13.9 points and 7.4 boards. He passes and defends too. He’s got an all-around skill set.
Dylan Werth, TMP:
Werth is an interesting guy to watch this spring and summer. At 6-foot-6, he might just develop into the one of the best big men at the small school level. He really stepped forward late in the year, making big ways in the playoffs. Some time on the court with big school bigs will really challenge him.
Trey Sommer, Humboldt:
Though just 6-foot-1, Sommer displayed a lot of talent in the paint last year. He scored 15.4 points and corralled 7.7 boards for the Cubs. He’s a tough multi-sport guy. His work earned him honorable mention in 2A, which he can build on this off-season.
