The sharp-shooting 6-foot, 170-pound combo guard has largely been under the radar due to being on the shelf during his high school career but he’s back and he’s coming up big. Axmaker has been making an impression in club ball and he’s hoping that college coaches are noticing.
“It’s been going really well so far this year,” Axmaker said. “I had a injury about 2 years ago that put me out for about 11 months and I wasn’t able to get back to full strength till beginning of this year. I am also battling with shin splints right now so that is also a challenge to play with but I’m doing the most I can with them.”
Axmaker has certainly shown out both earlier this club season with All-Around Players and now with FTS Hoops, showing off his lightning-quick release and the deep range on his shot. He’s certainly put up some big numbers in a handful of tournaments.
“I have had multiple 40 point games this year already and am averaging about 27 ppg this year so far,” Axmaker said. “I am now just working on improving my defensive game for the next level. I am not really the quickest player because of my injury so I’ve had to learn to play the game a different way so mainly just working on being in the best spots on defense that I can be in and helping rebound as much as I can for a guard.”
“I like where my offensive game is at,” Axmaker continued. “Just continuing to improve on all my go to moves and improving my shot as well.”
Because of his injury and the fact most of the tournaments so far haven’t hosted a ton of college coaches on the sidelines, Axmaker remains a bit of secret. But word of his exploits are starting to leak out and the junior is hopeful a college program that has what he’s looking for will come calling.
“Somewhere where I could both improve as a player and a person, as well as be a valuable asset to the team and help win games,” Axmaker said. “Also have a career path I would be interested in studying. I mean it would be a great experience to go D-1 but I would be grateful to go anywhere that would give me a chance to play basketball under scholarship.”
Axmaker will play out AAU this spring with FTS Hoops and then it will be onto the high school stage with Stayton, of which he’s really excited about helping lead.
“I think we are a solid team,” Axmaker said. “Very young but we have talent and hard workers. I definitely think we are gonna be very underrated once again but always love being a underdog and upsetting people.”
Axmaker currently ranks as the #32 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
