Prospect Spotlight: 2023 Makai Johnson
The number one prospect in the state of West Virginia, Maki Johnson Maki Johnson 6'4" | SG Huntington Prep | 2023 State #226 Nation WV , put on a show this past weekend at the Hoop Group Spring Jam Fest. Johnson is a lethal three point shooter and has been one of the top shooters I have seen from the 2023 class so far. Johnson has good size standing at 6’4 and is expected to have a big spring with the Wildcats Select during the AAU season. In my viewing of one game of Johnson this past weekend, he finished with six three pointers.
“I am pretty much known as a shooter, especially a three point shooter. I love to be a reliable catch and shoot option for my team.”
During his time on the AAU circuit this spring and summer he wants to show people that he can do a lot more than just shoot the basketball.
“During AAU this spring I want to prove that I can do other things too. I want to show that I can dunk, shoot from midrange, dribble and all of that. I want to prove that I am one of the top players in the country.”
Johnson loves Stephen Curry but has some family ties to Andrew Wiggins which has helped him.
“I really want to play like Steph Curry but my favorite NBA player is Andrew Wiggins. I am really close to him because he dates my sister and I have been able to learn a lot of stuff from him and that is who I look up to really.”
Right now Louisville and Indiana both have good starts to Johnson’s recruitment but we expect a lot more programs to come calling for him in June when coaches can start to class prospects from the 2023 class.
“Louisville and Indiana are definitely the two schools coming at me the hardest right now. I am looking forward to getting phone calls in June to hear from more schools.”
