Balls were bouncing all around the Gold Crown court, crowds of spectators watching, and a sense of normalcy. There were also plenty of baskets scored on the day. Here, we take a look at five scorers that stood out on Day 1.
Elijah Knudsen Elijah Knudsen 5'10" | CG Mead | 2022 State CO – Pro Skills
Knudsen walks into every situation with the reputation as the best shooter in the gym, and more often than not, it’s true. Well, on Saturday, it appeared to be true as he lit up the scoreboards in both of Pro Skills games, but his ability to keep Pro Skills in it in their first game of the day had him as one of the top standouts on the day. Knudsen has one of the quickest releases at the event, and his swift movements and ability to shoot it leaning or offset makes him a tough cover. He lit up Pluto Prospects for 27 points as the sniper hit 9 3-pointers in the game. Pro Skills came up a bit short, but it was not due to the Pro Skills guard who kept letting them fly. He could’ve easily scored 40+ points if he did not leave baskets out there on layups, but he was our AM top scorer with a 27 point outing. He’s a player that you watch and gravitate towards.
Graeydyn Buell — Gtown 2022
Buell is a bucket in every sense of the word and has been the surprise standout of the event so far. When you speak about controlling a game, letting it come to him, and the game seemingly slowing down as he gets himself going, he fits every bill. Buell was the Day 1 MVP as he led his team to two wins, including a game-winning finish in which he mouthed, “it’s too easy.” He is a big guard that welcomes contact, finishes through contact, and, if you back off, is able to knock down the 3-ball. Buell scored 25 points in a mercy-rule victory for GTown 2022 and followed it up with 20+ points, including the game-winner.
Aidan Kuhl Aidan Kuhl 6'0" | SG Rocky Mountain | 2022 State #245 Nation CO – Pro Skills
Kuhl is Pro Skills best ball-handler, and the lefty gets to where he wants with a deadly first-step and the ability to break a defender down off of the dribble. In Pro Skills’ early game, he got himself going in the first half to keep his team in it and also hit a deep 3-pointer to keep the defense honest. Kuhl is a player that is always moving, and his team rotated until they found him. He finds gaps in the defense, finishes well in transition, and plays with extreme heart. When he gets in a flow, he’s a tough player to slow down.
Sam Howery Sam Howery 6'1" | PG St. Mary’s | 2022 State CO – Pluto Prospects
Howery is a guard that pushes the pace and controls the tempo. He is out and running on makes and misses, and his willingness to try and catch the defense lacking gives his team extra scoring opportunities, and everyone moves when he has the ball in his hands as he will find them. He has been the best passer on the weekend so far, which has only opened up the rest of his game. Defenders want to stop the passes so much that he hits them with pass fakes and finishes at the basket. He is finishing amongst trees, creative finishing with either hand on reverses and floaters, and his 3-ball is also opening things up. When Howery has all elements of his game working, that Pluto team is a tough one to beat and his 20 point performance led his team to victory. Good opening day for the guard.
Brock Mishak Brock Mishak 6'3" | CG Fossil Ridge | 2022 State CO – Colorado Chaos
Mishak is a bit of a gunner, but when his shot is falling, it is falling. Mishak is a player that has unlimited range and the willingness to get his shots up. He is a player that can create shots for himself; he moves without the ball, and also his teammates set him screens to get him free. He can get to the rim and also is willing to make a pass to rid himself of the defense. He went on mini-flurries in the early games and got his team going, which opens up the rest of the offense. He’s a scorer to watch from the weekend.
