In this article, PH stays in the City of Brotherly Love to continue its season recap series of the Philadelphia Catholic League. With the top scorers and rebounders having already been talked about, we move onto the top assisters in the PCL in 2021.
Xzayvier Brown – Roman Catholic
Brown led the PCL in assists per game during the 2021 season and was a dynamic guard for Roman Catholic, averaging 6.9 APG along with 10.1 PPG and 2.8 SPG on 49.5 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Brown was a facilitator and a great one at that, dishing the ball off to two of the best scorers in the PCL in 2021: Daniel Skillings Daniel Skillings 6'5" | SG Roman Catholic | 2022 State PA and Khalil Farmer Khalil Farmer PG Roman Catholic | 2022 State PA . Roman’s success this season was due in large part to Brown’s success, and he’s only a sophomore, so potentially, we could see 10.0 APG averages coming out of him within the next two years.
Rahsool Diggins Rahsool Diggins 6'2" | PG Archbishop Wood | 2021 State #70 Nation PA – Archbishop Wood
Diggins was one of the most complete players in the PCL during the 2021 season and was one of several anchors on an Archbishop Wood team that ran the table all the way to the PIAA 6A state championship game. He was second in the league in assists per game, 6.7 APG, along with 16.4 PPG, 5.2 RPG and 2.8 SPG on 44 percent shooting from the field and 32.7 percent three-point shooting. Diggins is committed to play at UConn next season, and he’ll need to work on his outside shooting, but with guard James Bouknight, one of UConn’s best passers, having declared for the 2021 NBA Draft, Diggins will fit in perfectly as a great guard up top for the Huskies.
Dominic Vazquez Dominic Vazquez 6'0" | PG Archbishop Ryan | 2021 State PA – Archbishop Ryan
Vasquez made his living during the 2021 season as a fantastic passer, and helped guide Archbishop Ryan to the PIAA 5A state championship. He averaged 4.5 APG along with 10.7 PPG on 32.1 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc this season. Vazquez led Archbishop Ryan with 25 made threes during the season and made free throws with 49. He was among the better foul shooters on the team, shooting 70 percent from the line, but as a passer, he was clinical and really helped distribute the ball well amongst the entire team.
Justin Moore Justin Moore 6'1" | CG Archbishop Wood | 2022 State PA – Bishop McDevitt
Moore was the do-it-all player for Bishop McDevitt during the 2021 season, but he was no question among the best players in the PCL. He averaged 4.4 APG along with 12.1 PPG and 1.9 SPG on 42.6 shooting from the field. Moore was the lone player to post double-figure scoring averages this season for Bishop McDevitt and was as good, if not a better passer than he was a pure scorer. Moore, being the team’s top scorer, drew a lot of bodies toward him, which freed up space for his teammates. Those double-team traps worked wonders as he quickly got the ball off to a teammate for a high-percentage scoring opportunity.
Marcus Randolph Marcus Randolph 6'5" | SG Archbishop Wood | 2021 State PA – Archbishop Wood
On a team where four of its five starters committed to play Division I college basketball next fall, Randolph was arguably the best of the bunch, averaging 4.7 APG along with 16.6 PPG, 1.7 SPG and 5.4 RPG on 52.1 shooting from the field and 30 percent shooting from three-point range. Randolph is committed to playing at Richmond next season, and for good reason as he showed a lot of promise as a combo guard with an ability to shoot from deep, but also carve up defenders in the interior. Watch out this fall as Randolph will keep turning heads down in Virginia.
