Team Notes from Coach Buster Vincent:
“The 16U Schoolers National Team returns 5 kids from last year’s team that won 28 games and lost just two for coach Buster Vincent. This year’s roster is made up solely of kids from South Dakota and returns their top-scoring duo in 6’1 Guard Oliver Vincent Oliver Vincent 6'1" | PG Sioux Valley | 2023 State SD of Sioux Valley High School in Volga SD at 26.7ppg and Joe Sayler Joe Sayler 6'4" | SG White River | 2023 State #295 Nation SD a 6’3 Guard from White River High School at 27.4ppg a year ago. Joining the guard duo are returners Spencer Barr Spencer Barr 5'11" | PG Aberdeen Central | 2023 State SD 5″11 guard from Aberdeen Central High school, 6’0 guard Elliot Whitney Elliot Whitney 6'0" | CG Sioux Falls Lincoln | 2023 State SD of Sioux Falls Lincoln, and 6’8 Big man Damon Wilkinson Damon Wilkinson 6'10" | C De Smet | 2023 State SD of DeSmet.”
“We have a team this year that will be improved defensively and will look to really control the glass. Hopefully, with the improvements in these two areas, we can look to turn our defensive pressure into some easy offense.”
16U Schoolers National Team Roster:
Comments from Coach Buster Vincent:
Oliver Vincent Oliver Vincent 6'1" | PG Sioux Valley | 2023 State SD (2023) |6-1 G| Sioux Valley – A very skilled player who can really score the basketball and sees the floor well. Look for Vincent to lead the Schoolers from the PG position this summer. Scores, leads, and can really guard on defense. Vincent has several schools watching his young career.
Oliver was SD Class A first-team All-State selection, Register player of the year, 2-time first-team All-conference performer, Argus leader selection, Class A all-tournament team, and school record holder for pts in a season.
Joe Sayler Joe Sayler 6'4" | SG White River | 2023 State #295 Nation SD (2023) |6-3 G| White River – Joe is verbally committed to South Dakota State and is only 16 years of age. A lengthy guard who can really shoot the ball. Joe will be the 2-guard on a very nice schooler team once again this year and look to shoulder the scoring load.
Joe was first-team Class B All-State, All-Conference, Argus Leader, KELO POY nomination, class B-All tournament, and lead state with 29ppg.
Elliot Whitney Elliot Whitney 6'0" | CG Sioux Falls Lincoln | 2023 State SD (2023) |6-0 G| Sioux Falls Lincoln – Elliott is a shooter. Set the school record for threes made on the JV team in a season at Lincoln. Elliott will have to be guarded at all times as he is always in range. He will really help the Schoolers spread teams out and keep the floor spaced.
Spencer Barr Spencer Barr 5'11" | PG Aberdeen Central | 2023 State SD (2023) |5-11 G| Aberdeen Central – Spencer helped lead Aberdeen Central to a 5th place finish in Class AA. Spencer really leads the Schoolers on defense with his ability to really defend. Spencer attacks the basket and can really create open looks for his team.
Spencer Fernholz (2023) |6-4 F| Miller – Spencer is extremely athletic and has the ability to flush some extremely impressive dunks while attacking the rim. Runs the floor well and looks to impress his teammates and make an impact in his first year on the Schoolers National Team.
Steele Morgan Steele Morgan 6'5" | PF Mitchell | 2023 State SD (2023) |6-5 F| Mitchell – Steele was a valuable 6th man on a Mitchell team that finished 7th at the State AA tournament this year. Steele has a high basketball IQ and can post up and bang with bigger guys if needed. Steele looks to add valuable depth to the Schoolers roster in his first year with the program.
Damon Wilkinson Damon Wilkinson 6'10" | C De Smet | 2023 State SD (2023) |6-8 F| De Smet – Damon put up 9 points and almost 10 rebounds a contest a year ago. Damon has really developed into a nice post presence and can run the floor well for a big. Damon helped lead De Smet to a State B Championship and garnered an All-Tournament selection along the way.
Aiden Jensen (2023) |6-7 F| Madison – Aiden looks to add size, athleticism, and depth to the 16u Schoolers in his first summer of action. Rebounds well and does a great job protecting the rim defensively.
Jacob VandeWeerd (2023) |6-8 F| Canton – Jacob had a nice year for Canton as a sophomore and looks to really develop over the summer playing with the Schoolers at the post position. Rebounds well, plays great post defense, and can score in the post.
Team Notes from Coach Buster Vincent:
“The Schoolers averaged just shy of 80 ppg a year ago and will look to play up-tempo again this year. We want to control the glass so we can get quick clean outlets and push the tempo of the game while playing in space, creating paint touches, and hitting open shots while having fun and growing as individuals and a team.”
