I wanted to soak everything in from the high school season before this article came out. Congratulations to all the teams, players, and coaches on a great 2020-2021 season.
Class A State Champions – West Fargo Packers
Class B State Champions – Kindred Vikings
Class A
State Coach of the Year – Adam Palczewski of West Fargo – State A Champions with an amazing run in the tournament when it mattered.
EDC Coach of the Year – Tom Kirchoffner of West Fargo Sheyenne – Unbelievable regular season and they shattered school records with consecutive wins. He has a great analytical mind for the game. He runs some very impressive sets on the offensive end. The Mustangs improved by leaps and bounds compared to the start of the season.
WDA Coach of the Year– Dean Winczewski of Minot – State Champion runner-up. They had an impressive regular season as well. He got the most out of his team. The Magi played great team defense. His players played tough and gritty.
Class B
State Coach of the Year – Brad Woehl of Kindred – State B Champions.
Region 1 Coach of the Year – Brad Woehl of Kindred – They had the best defense in Class B this year. He gets his players to play hard. They execute sets and BLOBS well.
Region 2 Coach of the Year – Dan Moore of North Border – An almost perfect regular season. They came up short in the Region Championship. They were underrated all season. After watching them play, you can see the Eagles are a well-coached team.
Region 3 Coach of the Year – Kevin Strobel of Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier – State Champion runner-up. They had a wild and impressive District and Region tournament. His team played tough and disciplined. They came close in the championship. He coached a resilient group of Rebels.
Region 4 Coach of the Year – Rick Smith of Four Winds/Minnewaukan – A masterful teacher and coach. The Indians lost in the State Semifinal game. He coaches a fun style of basketball that players must love, and fans enjoy watching. Smith is excellent with player development and spreading basketball knowledge.
Region 5 Coach of the Year – Brian Nieuwsma of Flasher – The Bulldogs made a great post-season run but came up a bit short in the championship. He is a great teacher of the game and does a nice job developing his players.
Region 6 Coach of the Year – Kevin St. Claire of Bottineau – Another team that made a run in the playoffs but could not pull off the big upset. The Braves spaced the floor well and ran some really nice looks on offense.
Region 7 Coach of the Year – Jeremy Brandt of Beulah – One of the best basketball minds in the entire state of North Dakota. The Miners are always ready and prepared for each game. He does a not job game planning and practicing end-of-game situations.
Region 8 Coach of the Year – Jordan Carlson of Powers Lake – The Ranchers had an impressive and dominant run through Region 8. They run some nice actions on offense and play a fun style of basketball. He does good work all the way through his program.
