Here’s a look at some of the top 15U scorers in Lincoln last weekend (in alphabetical order):
Daveion Burnette, forward, Team Tru 2:
Burnette can kind of fly under the radar because he doesn’t need to dominate the ball to get a lot of buckets. He’s got great spring and a lightning-quick release in the lane that lets him get jumpers off in traffic. He’s ultra smooth and never looks like he has to give max effort to make plays. He plays with a calm demeanor and controlled game, but man is he athletic.
Gunnar Lym, guard, Lincoln Supreme 2:
Lym just somehow gets to the bucket and finishes. He is a really interesting player to watch. He has a combination of speed, quickness, strength and get to the hole. He also has a ton of savvy, creativity, and for lack of a better work, trickiness. He fools defenders on the way to the bucket with his awareness and patience. He has a nice jumper and a variety of moves, but it’s surprising how many point-blank shots he can get because of his clever game. And you shouldn’t overlook just how physically tough he is.
Jacoby Mehrman, guard, South Dakota Network (pictured):
Mehrman’s name could probably be included on just about any superlative list you put together from Lincoln. He did just about everything but pop popcorn and clean the toilets. The 6-foot-3 guard/wing stood out in every phase, but as the best player at the tournament, he tallied a ton of points. Most impressive was how he scored buckets when his team was challenged. He can shoot it from deep, and can score in transition. But the way he got in the lane and finished was especially impressive. He’s physical and tough and can score in a variety of ways through contact.
Carter Mick, guard, Lincoln Supreme 1:
Mick is a high-IQ guard who doesn’t dominate the ball or take a ton of shots. But he’s an efficient scorer who uses his height and vision to get a lot of scores. He’s a smooth 6-foot-2 ball handler and shooter who gets in the lane with his toughness and gets points in the context of the team concept. His athleticism is deceptive, and he’s one of a whole team of guys who really push the tempo. The whole Lincoln 1 team is relentless in how fast it gets the ball from one end to the other.
Amarian Womack, guard, KC Running Rebels:
Womack is a 5-foot-10 guard who can push the ball from end to end and get to the bucket or find open jumpers. Womack is ultra quick and athletic, and he plays with non-stop aggressiveness. He’s a threat from deep, which helps him get a step on defenders who have to crowd him. With the ball in his hands a lot of the time, he creates a ton of opportunities. But he’s a team player who doesn’t necessarily shoot first. With his athleticism and fearlessness, he makes a lot of highlight plays.
Honorable mention:
Chuck Love, forward, Lincoln Supreme 2025:
One of the best teams in the 15U division was a team of 8th graders from Lincoln. Love is a guy you notice the minute he steps on the floor. But once you get over his lanky 6-foot-4 frame and long arms, you see a player who can handle the ball, make a ton of plays in transition and shoot the lights out. Love might not have been the best player among the 15 year olds, but he might have the highest ceiling and most well-rounded game. Just wait until he grows into that body.
