Note: I was only at the Supreme Courts venue in Aurora, Illinois. If your team did not play there, this is why your players may have been omitted from my list.
Mike Erbeck, 6’1″, SG, Homeschool/IBA Illinois All Stars Johnson
Don’t let the laid back attitude and the long hair fool you, Erbeck is an issue on the hardwood. The homeschool guard had one of the most impressive 3-point shooting performances of the weekend for me. He rattled off 5 threes for 22 points in a win against Full Package Elite on Friday night. He is a well-aware guard who has the ability to get to his spots and get a quick shot off. He knows exactly where to be on both offense and defense and can frustrate a team on both ends. He’s a pesky on-ball defenders who has the gas on for all 32 minutes on the floor. He’s a great, solid player who should break onto the Illinois radar soon.
Anthony McGhee, 6’3″, SG, Notre Dame Prep (IL)/Full Package 2022
McGhee is a smooth, under control guard that can kill you from the perimeter and inside the arc. He’s got complete control of his body and motions, letting him put the ball on a string and get to where he needs to get for both jumpers and setting up teammates. He’s a good distance shooter and reliable offensive piece alongside fellow guard Nick Pierre Nick Pierre 6'3" | SG Round Lake | 2021 State IL . He’ll be a solid option on a good Notre Dame team and should garner some attention from crowds and scouts alike.
Sencere Hood, 6’, HG, Romeoville HS (IL)/Old Gold 2022-1
Hood was definitely holding home court advantage all weekend. While Old Gold lost a few close ones down the stretch, Hood definitely raised his stock. A relentless offense player, Hood has the build of a football player and wide shoulders that make keeping him in front of you very difficult. He’s unafraid to get into the paint and finish over bigger defenders. As a shooter, he’s got some efficiency work, but can knock down a good amount of triples if given enough attempts. He’s a good defender who can use his big frame to stop players from being effective on offense. He should have a good season for a Romeoville team who is losing big man Tyler Johnson Tyler Johnson 6'2" | SF Depaul Prep | 2021 State IL .
Matt Sommerville, 6’6″, SG, Whitney Young HS (IL)/South Cook Jags 2022
In terms of preparedness for the next level, Sommerville took the cake for me this weekend. A massive guard with a deep bag, Sommerville looked like he could walk on and be successful for a D1 program tomorrow, if needed. He’s a long guard who is aggressive and can finish around the rim, both in terms of dunks and strong finishes. He can light it up from downtown and has a quick trigger and the ability to get hot very quickly. He is big and skilled and looks like he should be ready to compete at the next level. Keep an eye out for him and Whitney Young this season on the Chicago scene.
D. J. Starr, 6’, HG, University HS (IL)/Illinois HoopStars 2022
Starr had what was no doubt the performance of the weekend in the Supreme Courts facility. He dropped in 28 points in a high octane game against Hoops 4 Health and Karlo Kolak. He’s got a beautiful stroke from downtown and can get to his spots for high percentage looks. He has an uncanny ability to change his shot in the air and leaves big men scratching their heads trying to stop him. He’s got a smooth handle and can direct the traffic for his team, leading to his teammates getting in on the action on his behalf. He needs to improve on the defensive end, but for now, he’s got the offensive game on lock and will be a force to be reckoned with on the Illinois scene this year.
