LONG BEACH, Ca—It’s almost surreal being in a gym after almost fifteen months watching games on the “big screen”. However, after diving into St. John Bosco and Windward to break the ice, I could see myself getting back into the groove of venturing from one gym to another seeking out prospects for all levels of college basketball—and that is exactly what I received as I watched 2023 standout Tyler Rolison Tyler Rolison 6'0" | PG St. Bernard | 2023 State #150 Nation CA-S (St. Bernard) slice-and-dice his way to the rim in leadin his team to a thrilling 55-50 victory over host St. Anthony.
Joaquin Strong (St. Bernard)
2022, PF, 6-foot-7, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the better up-and-coming prospects in Southern California is Strong. This projected 4-man has a nice frame with good length and he has soft hands. When on the block he can either face-up and take his defender off the bounce or power through for the finish. He rebounds well in and out of his area and he’ll rim run for the finish. With continued polish in the areas of footwork and fundamentals, he should evolve into a strong Division 1 player.
Makaih Williams Makaih Williams 6'1" | PG Capistrano Valley Christian | 2022 State CA-S (St. Anthony)
2022, CG, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Williams was my top sleeper in this game. He has an ideal Division 1 frame with long arms and he plays both ends of the game. He can score from all three levels and his 3-point shot looks solid. He showed a nice burst off the dribble and he plays the game at a great pace. Defensively, he slides his feet well and with his long arms and active hands he should evolve into a high-level defender.
Austin Williams (St. Bernard)
2021, CG, 5-foot-8, 150 pounds
Joel’s Take: The chiseled started the game off hot as he drained a couple of deep 3-pointers He is a strong combo-guard who will defend and he does a nice job getting in the passing lanes. Due to his competitive nature and shooting touch, this lefty should get some looks at the community college level.
Jayden Bush (St. Anthony)
2022, PG, 6-foot, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Bush is a strong lefty who is quite quick off the bounce. He sets up his defender with the bounce and then proceeds to blow by him with a swifty move. While attacking he has the strength to carry his defender on his hip and elevate amongst the “bigs” for the finish. He can nail the pull-up jump shot or 3-pointer, but he does have a tendency to get off balance at times while releasing his shot.
George Ashley (St. Anthony)
2021, PG, 5-foot-11, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Ashley has the physical tools to be play at some level of college. The strong point guard has a nice burst off the dribble where he can either hit the pull-up or find an open teammate. He has range to the 3-point stripe as well and he too needs to do a better job of getting on balance while releasing his shot. Defensively, he has quick feet and hands and has the strength to be a tough defender.
