St. Anthony and Bishop Montgomery are consistently two of SoCal’s best programs, but the Saints showed that they feature more talent and depth than the youthful Knights in a convincing 78-60 victory back on April 16th. Below are five takeaways from that game.
Elijah Price Elijah Price 6'8" | PF St. Anthony | 2022 State CA-S vying for best big man in SoCal
The 6-foot-8 junior continues to make strides to his overall game. Price finished with an impressive stat line of 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots while showing positional versatility and improved strength inside when it comes to defense and rebounding. Price is a fluid athlete in transition, can score with his back to the basket or out of a face-up situation and knocks down free throws with consistency. He went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in this game.
Jayden Bush Jayden Bush 6'0" | PG St. Anthony | 2022 CA-S is making strides as a shooter
The 5-foot-11 point guard has always been a reliable passer, playmaker, floor general and solid on-ball and team defender, but the final piece of his game was adding a consistent scoring punch. Bush, a junior, showed improved confidence pulling from distance and it resulted in him hitting three 3-pointers en route to 13 points. That added dimension to his game would make the crafty lefty a tough cover.
Makaih Williams Makaih Williams 6'1" | PG Capistrano Valley Christian | 2022 State CA-S deserves more regional recognition
Williams is one of the smoother scoring guards in Southern California, but, for some reason, he doesn’t get talked about in hoop circles as a top prospect at that position. The 6-foot-1 junior has a smooth shooting stroke out to three-point range both off the catch and off the bounce, he connects on mid-range pull-ups consistently and gets into his stop-and-pop jumper with limited dribbles while creating space from defenders. Williams scored an efficient 12 points in this game while sitting much of the third and fourth quarters.
George Ashley is an intriguing junior college prospect
The senior wing was really feeling it offensively in this one, scoring a game-high 17 points in a variety of ways. Ashley opened his night up with a three-pointer, but closed it out with a combination of mid-range jumpers and strong, athletic slashes and finishes at the rim. Ashley has a well-built 6-foot-2 frame and creates offensive opportunities for himself when moving without the ball or in isolation situations.
Are either of these teams bound for the Open Division?
The CIF Southern Section will hold regional playoffs this season meaning the Open Division field will feature the top teams in the section. Both St. Anthony and Bishop Montgomery have appeared in the Open at least once in the last few years, but for Bishop this is looking like a down year for them. The Knights are 0-5 on the season and feature a young roster with little varsity experience. St. Anthony is a fringe Open Division team and whether or not the Saints get in will depend on their performance through the rest of Del Rey League play.
