Tyler Boegeman of Minnesota Crossfire Barger (Shakopee 6’2 Guard). You will sense a theme with the 16u kids and it’s all about balanced teams winning games. And who was often that balanced player leading the balanced team to wins? The point guard. Tyler Boegeman had the biggest make of the day for the Crossfire semi-final run and that was an attacking lay-up that clinched the win over Minnesota Comets. He then followed that with another dozen in the two score in over ECI. Shakopee players always seem so steady and we saw that in a lot of places Saturday.
Termaine Fulton Jr of Minnesota Fury Hayed (Shakopee 6’0 guard). Termaine Fulton Jr may have been the story of 16U basketball on day one. Fulton hit nine threes in the first two games combined including six in the Fury win over the Comets Elite. I think what was most amazing to me was that Fulton seemed just as focused on keeping the ball moving but often times it came back to him in a scoring spot or it was best for his team if he looked to his own offense. Little forced but a lot produced. Used the dribble to get to spots really well and was seemingly confident that every shot he took would fall. Played both guard spots for the Fury, one of the best surprises of they day.
Adam Jenkins Adam Jenkins 6'9" | C Moorhead | 2023 State MN of ECI Prospects (Moorhead 6’8 PF/C). The best 16u post player I saw yesterday was Adam Jenkins Adam Jenkins 6'9" | C Moorhead | 2023 State MN . Big rebounding numbers in both games (vs Crossfire, Fury Hayes) including one double-double, Adam also finished at a high percent stepping through or powering up. His open floor run dunk in the quarters late in the game was memorable but most importantly was his ability to end possessions with a d-board one way and finish most of his chances the other way in the paint.
Akeem Nelson Akeem Nelson 6'1" | PG Minnesota prep academy | 2022 MN of Minnesota Heat Pratt (Minnesota Prep 6’1 Point Guard). Another balanced team that I think will have a bright 16u season is Heat Pratt. They lost in the quarters to the Playmakers by two scores after a tough battle. Nelson caught my eye the most possession by possession with his delivery. Nelson went to the cup and scored his share but I the more important part of the day was Akeem’s transition feeds, his one dribble attack moving the ball (often for corner or wing threes), and his “next pass” intelligence. Nelson gave up about five good shots of his own yesterday to provide great shots for teammates. All around I like his potential as he continues to move the basketball.
Soren Richardson of WOTN (Northfield 6’3 Shooting Guard). As far as WOTN went it was a great day of team basketball. Picking one guy from the group is tough but we have a week to get into all the players that did well. Today I think it’s time to talk about how Soren being a better prospect than some of the winter video we’ve looked at could truly tell. Live viewings showed that Soren moved his feet better defensively getting that extra step and covering down quicker than I understood. That block off the backboard helping down was memorable. Of course if we are talking Soren we need to speak on that left hand. Richardson has a pretty left handed stroke we saw with a transition three, catch and shoot perimeter makes, and off one or two dribbles. Had a nice year at Northfield and continued that into the spring helping WOTN to the final four.
