MVP. Chet Holmgren Chet Holmgren 7'0" | C Minnehaha Academy | 2021 State #1 Nation MN . Our last look at Chet Holmgren Chet Holmgren 7'0" | C Minnehaha Academy | 2021 State #1 Nation MN is the 5-star talent scoring 18 points on eight shots, grabbing 13 rebounds, and dishing out seven assists. The finger roll off the spin move (or the dunk off the spin move) will be the big highlight many remember but his ability to pass the ball and keep his team balanced with high percentage shots is what I will take away from the end of the year. Of course the Cardinals were in a state of continual flux trying to figure out how to shoot and score with Chet anywhere near them on the defensive end.
Top Prospect to Know. Mercy Miller (after Chet of course). Right now you have to call Mercy the state’s top freshman. Just picked up offers from Minnesota and Missouri, and his play on the court this season backed everything up. Mercy is an excellent spot up shooter and his ability to catch and attack off a rotation to score with touch while getting hit is uncanny. You don’t see young players consistently take a hit and touch in shots like Mercy does. And as a 14 or 15 year old, Mercy scored 16 points in a state title game making 6 of 13 attempts.
Surprise Performer. Erik Hedstrom Erik Hedstrom 6'5" | SF Alexandria | 2022 State MN . It was a rough day for the Cards but they finished a nice season losing only two games. Alexandria is a balanced team and throughout the playoffs several guys played well. In the title game Hedstrom rebounded seven times taking balls away from athletes plus he was the long Alex player in double figures. Erik has a nice touch and he’s likely to have a good 17u season and a big senior year.
Defensive Player of the Game. Hercy Miller Hercy Miller 6'3" | PG Minnehaha Academy | 2021 State MN . Hercy’s athletic ability could make him an incredible defender at the next level. We saw glimpses of it tonight as he jumped to spots defensively cutting players off and getting steals. Has rapid push up the court, Hercy’s amazing first step, his quick bounce off the floor, all of it makes Hercy one of the more athletic guards in the state. Hercy scored 24 points on 10 of 14 shooting plus dished out four assists.
Minnehaha Academy returns…. The Redhawks will have two starters back: Mercy Miller (top frosh in the state) and Prince Aligbe Prince Aligbe 6'6" | SF Minnehaha Academy | 2022 State #167 Nation MN (nationally ranked wing). Donovan Smith Donovan Smith 5'10" | PG Minnehaha Academy | 2022 OH started at state (back from his injury) and is a top three point shooter, he will be a senior. Chase Carter Chase Carter 6'7" | PF Minnehaha Academy | 2022 MN has been the 6th/7th Man, he will be in the post.
Alexandria returns… Kris Hoskins will once again be the point guard and Erik Hedstrom Erik Hedstrom 6'5" | SF Alexandria | 2022 State MN is a skilled player back on the wing. Both were double figures scorers this year. Worker Carter Steffensmeier also returns as does Semi-Final hero Myles Sansted, a reserve that nearly averaged double figures this year. That’s four of their top six guys.
