The event, which featured over 250 teams and some of the top programs in the Midwest, was one of the biggest events of the young grassroots season. My focus this weekend was on the 2023 division, which featured several quality wing players. In this article we breakdown the top wings I saw this weekend.
Kamari Slaughter Kamari Slaughter 6'2" | SG Cathedral | 2023 State IN 6’4 SF 94 Feet – A physical specimen, Slaughter impacted games with his defense and ability to get out in transition and score. Like several of the 94 feet guys, he was able to turn defense into offense, getting out in the passing lanes getting steals, and converting at the other end.
Ethan Burns 6’3 SF PM Showcase – I was going to do a positional player series simply because of Burns, the undersized forward was a playmaker for Showcase this weekend, handling the ball in the backcourt and creating for teammates. One of those guys that may not pass the eye test yet has a big-time skill set, that allows him to be efficient on the floor.
Terrmell Akers 6’5 SF Lonnie Westerfield Elite – Akers plays hard. Against Rush Academy that energy and effort translated into a 27 point performance. He got the majority his buckets from offensive rebounds and his ability to get out and finish in transition.
Matt Moore 6’6 SF Chicago Lockdown (featured image) – I really have no idea what Moore is other than a player. Sometimes he played in the post, other times he was using two or three dribbles to get to the bucket and finish. On the defensive end, he hedged and switched ball screens while legitimately defending 2 through 5.
Ronell Hightower 6’3 SG CCB – Hightower was a problem when attacking opponents downhill, he also showed the ability to score with his back to the basket. Part of an athletic CCB team, the lefty showed the ability to manufacture buckets throughout the weekend.
Dante Favor 6’6 SF Top 1 – Favors was one of the smoother wings I had the pleasure of seeing. The 6’6 forward flashed glimpses of ball skills, using the bounce to get to his spot on the floor. Once there he showed good shooting form, raising up and knocking down several mid-range jumpers in the game I saw.
