The event, which featured over 250 teams and some of the top programs in the Midwest, was one of the biggest events of the young grassroots season. My focus this weekend was on the 2023 division, which featured many talented players. It also featured several players that could flat-out shoot it. In this article, we take a look at some of the top 16U Snipers.
Collin Wainscott Collin Wainscott 6'2" | PG Marmion Academy | 2023 State IL 5’11 PG Illinois Stars Gordon – The Illinois Stars PG got the action started right away on Friday. A shifty guard with a slick handle, he showed good form and a consistent release. Wainscott knocked down 4 trey’s in a 25 point effort against Breakaway.
Braden Becker 6’0 PG Team Iowa – Becker was one of the better fundamental shooters I saw on the week. He did a terrific job of doing his work early. The 6’0 PG displayed great shot prep, getting his feet set and having his hands ready before receiving the ball. This simple fundamental allowed him to raise up and get his shot off quickly over closing defenders.
Jackson Niego Jackson Niego 6'0" | PG Lyons Township | 2023 State IL 6’1 SG Chicago Lockdown – The floor spacing PG does more than shoot the ball, however, his best skill is his ability to space the floor from the 1. Niego showed good form and was accurate when shooting it from the corner and wings.
Jason Kobe Jason Kobe 6'1" | SG Marquette Catholic | 2023 State IN 6’1 SG 94 Feet – 94 feet played an uptempo slashing style. This means that Kobe didn’t get a ton of shots, however, the team’s style of play forced defenders to help off. When they did, the sharpshooting 2 guard used textbook form and accurate 3 point shooting to make them pay.
Bronson Bartuch 5’8 PG All In Athletics Williams Black – Bartuch got hot and just couldn’t miss in a game against M14. The diminutive PG got his shot off quickly in catch-in-shoot situations. He knocked down 4 3’s in the first half and finished with a total of 6 en route to 28 points in the game.
Max Niesman 5’11 PG Breakaway – I watched Niesman play against Meanstreets and he had the opposing coaches going crazy. It wasn’t just the 3’s, but it was the clutch ability of them, combined with his degree of difficulty. Niesman moved well without the ball, and managed to make several off-balance 3’s in the two games I watched him play.
