The event, which featured over 250 teams and some of the top programs in the Midwest, was one of the biggest events of the young grassroots season. My focus this weekend was on the 2023 division, which featured several players with the ability to play both backcourt spots effectively. In this article we break down the top Combo Guards I saw this weekend.
Luke Newhall Luke Newhall 6'5" | SF Walter Payton College Prep | 2023 IL 6’3 Chicago Lockdown – If winner was a position, then that’s where I would put Newhall. He did all the little things to help his team win, and then added a lot of the big things. He defends, handles makes timely shots, and seemed to come up with every 50/50 or in traffic rebound for his team.
Jake Fiegen Jake Fiegen 6'3" | SG New Trier | 2023 State IL 6’3 Full Package – I really wanted to see Fiegan and Newhall matchup. They have similar frames and play styles. Fiegan shot the ball well this weekend, and also showed the ability to slash to the hoop using his body to finish through contact. He was an absolute problem this weekend.
Dominic Jankowski Dominic Jankowski 6'3" | PG Grayslake North | 2023 IL 6’2 All In Athletics Williams Black (featured image) – Jankowski was the first player, I started writing about on the weekend. He’s the prototypical combo. He can handle and facilitate like a point, but also score and create like a two-guard. He loved using his spin move to get into the lane and finish. I loved watching him play.
Marshaun Flakes 6’2 B3 Athletics – A bucket getter supreme. Flakes seemed to always understand how to score the basketball. It didn’t matter if he was in transition, slashing or grabbing offensive boards. The 6’2 Combo just found ways to change the scoreboard throughout the weekend.
Myles Colvin Myles Colvin 6'5" | SG Heritage Christian | 2023 State #51 Nation IN 6’5 INB Elite – I think Colvin belongs in this category simply for the fact that he had the ball in his hands most of the time for INB. He has a good handle, a quick first step, and showed the ability to get all the way to the rim or to separate and create mid-range shot opportunities for himself.
