There may not be anyone who benefitted more from the CBG ECE 24 camp than Richmond’s own Alphonzo Billups Alphonzo Billups 6'7" | SF Varina | 2022 State #154 Nation VA , who picked up offers from a number of schools that were watching the stream including Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and others. The 6’7” wing came in with one thing on his mind, and that was to compete against the best and prove that he’s right there with them.
“I just want to compete with the best 24 on the east coast right now,” he said.
Billups is possibly the guy I had seen the most of in the event, as I watched him throughout his sophomore season and he played in a lot of the CBG Fall and Winter Series, and seeing his development has been very encouraging. Over the last three or so times I watched him, including the ECE 24 Camp, he seems to be turning the corner and starting to be much more aggressive on both ends of the floor.
He’s a good athlete that can play above the rim and thrives in transition, but it’s the way that he plays with the ball in his hands that separates him from other wings. He’s a capable facilitator who can see over defenders and deliver passes on point with both hands, and his unselfishness makes him easy and fun to play with. He’s improved on his ability to shoot it from deep and can shoot the midrange as well, and as he has become more aggressive he’s become more productive across the board.
Billups already holds a slew of offers, and says he has interest from a number of other schools as well including UVA, Tulsa and more. As his recruitment has continued to take off, Billups says that he plans to take some visits this summer whenever Covid protocols allow him to take in person visits.
“I plan to visit as many schools as I can, Covid has been in the way but I definitely like Temple and VCU right now,” he said.
As far as what he needs to continue to work on, Billups is already starting to show that improvement as far as making sure he doesn’t take any plays off.
“I need to continue to just work on playing every play and valuing every possession.”
Billups will be playing with a very talented Team Loaded VA team this summer on the 3SSB Circuit, a team in which all of their current starting 5 hold high major offers. Playing with other talented players will give him a chance to showcase his playmaking ability and he’ll also likely draw the defensive matchup of the other team’s best player. He’s going to turn a lot of heads this summer and should continue to see his offer sheet grow more and more.
