With teams ranging from the Carolinas to Virginia to Maryland and more, there was plenty of talent for every level and in every classification as well.
All of the games on court one from Friday through Sunday were streamed on the CBG Live Network and can be found here.
We start with part two of the standouts, taking a look at some of the top underclassmen from VA in the building.
Robby Matos Robby Matos 5'9" | PG Blue Ridge | 2023 VA | 5’10” PG | BWSL Pace 2023
Matos has quietly been one of the top guards in the 2023 class at VES over the past two years, and he was very impressive at the event as he showed terrific playmaking ability for himself and others off the bounce. Matos is an exceptional athlete with a lightning quick first step and great end-to-end speed in transition, and he’s an explosive finisher who can play at the rim at his size and has a good middle game as well. He sets the tone on both ends and is a big time on ball defender that can guard 94 feet, and as he continues to improve his shooting from deep he’ll be a very intriguing prospect moving forward.
Desmond Roberts Desmond Roberts 6'5" | SF St Anne’s Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’5” WF | BWSL Pace 2023
Another VES prospect that is trending in the right way, Roberts is a freak athlete that can play and guard almost every position on the floor and makes an impact with his athleticism on both ends. He’s a big time finisher above the rim and is an excellent rim protector at his size, he’s improved his skill set as far as his ability to handle and create his own shot. His athleticism and high motor made him very productive across the board, and he’s part of a young group at VES that will be very good moving forward.
Lawrence Cole | 6’1” CG | Virginia Nets 2023
Cole is part of a young Virginia Nets team that has been impressive so far this season winning multiple Big Shots events, including the Mid Atlantic Mecca this weekend in the 16U division. The Northside guard is a talented combo guard that can run the show and is excellent in transition, and whenever they needed a bucket he found a way to get one. He can get to spots and make shots from multiple levels, he showed good toughness on both ends and made winning plays regularly.
Elijah Mitchell | 6’4”F | Virginia Nets 2023
Mitchell is the heart and soul of this Nets team and their go-to guy when he gets it going, and is a very tough and physical presence with a solid skill set that should only get better with time. He’s a strong and mobile forward that can play and guard multiple positions, he’s a big time finisher above the rim and once he gets hot he’s able to hit shots from beyond the arc when he’s left open. He plays with great toughness on both ends and is very productive on both ends.
Aiden Pattell | 5’10” PG | Team Loaded Dreamchasers 2024
Pattell is a natural floor general that runs the show extremely well and is able to create for himself and others with ease. He has a smoothness to his game as he changes speeds and pace well, and he always knows where his teammates are and makes good reads with the ball in his hands. He’s a talented shot maker and has a good middle game to score off the bounce.
Patrick Nguyen | 5’10” PG | VA Playmakerz 2024
Speaking of floor generals, Nguyen is exactly that for a talented Playmakerz team that won the 15U championship. A natural point guard who sets the tone on both ends and keeps everyone involved, Nguyen is very smart and savvy with the ball in his hands and handles pressure well to get his team into sets. He’s the type of guy that is always poised and under control, and is a natural leader for his team.
Julian Rivera | 6’0” WG | VA Playmakerz 2024
Rivera was one of the top scorers for the Playmakerz, as he’s very strong for his age and is able to play both on and off the basketball and works hard to get open to get his shots off. He’s a three level shot maker that can get hot quickly and attacks closeouts after he makes a few, and he’s a very good finisher through traffic when he gets downhill. He’s a bucket getter by trait but also brings it on the defensive end and is a good team player as well.
Jaquan Womack | 6’5” WF | VA Playmakerz 2025
I usually don’t write about kids who aren’t in high school yet, but Womack played up on the 15U team and was their best prospect and looks like he’ll be one of the elite prospects int he DMV area moving forward. At 6’5” he has a terrific frame for his age, and he has a blend of athleticism, strength and skill that makes him very intriguing moving forward. He has a very good handle and is able to create space, he can shoot it from deep and is an excellent finisher through traffic. He’ll be heading to Paul VI in the WCAC next year.
