Who are the best one-two players in South Florida?
For this list, I left out graduating seniors as their high school careers have now ended. Many of these prospects play for teams that are annually in contention for district and state championships.
Check out part two of my picks…
Jamai Hager-Tejada Jamai Hager-Tejada 5'10" | CG Mater Lakes | 2023 FL / Anthony Floyd Anthony Floyd 5'7" | CG Hallandale | 2023 FL – Mater Lakes Academy
These two prospects will go into their third varsity season playing with one another in the fall. That kind of chemistry is valuable as both players have shown production. The 5-foot-11 Hager-Tejada averaged 18.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals as a sophomore. Moreover, the combo guard went 30-of-82 (37 percent) from behind the 3-point line. I don’t love the term, but I like Hager-Tejada at both guard spots. He has shown a killer instinct to attack the rim and can finish at a high rate. He can be incredibly dangerous if he grows a few more inches. On the perimeter, he knocked down two or more 3-pointers in eight games. Against Chaminade-Madonna, Hager-Tejada buried seven and had 29 points. Floyd is a quick/agile prospect that fits well as a point guard. The 5-foot-9 sophomore is a good ball handler with an explosive first step in layup situations. He also uses his current size well to finish efficiently. On defense, Floyd has good leverage on defense and uses his hands well to create turnovers. He averaged 10.7 points, 3.9 assists and three steals in seven record games. Against Westminster Christian, Floyd scored 26 points on 9-of-16 from the field. I think they work really well together, with each player having different strengths.
Kolby King Kolby King 6'2" | PG Pembroke Pines | 2022 State FL / Geoffrey Sprouse Geoffrey Sprouse 5'11" | CG Pines Charter | 2022 State FL – Pembroke Pines Charter
The Jaguars have as good of a junior group as any team in South Florida. Two of those players are guards Kolby King Kolby King 6'2" | PG Pembroke Pines | 2022 State FL and Geoffrey Sprouse Geoffrey Sprouse 5'11" | CG Pines Charter | 2022 State FL . The pair combined to average 31 points per game en route to Class 5A state championship. The 6-foot-1 King scored a season-high 27 points on 9-of-13 from the field against Choctawhatchee in the title game victory. Sprouse added 14 of his own and scored 23 points in the district championship against Miami Norland. Pembroke Pines Charter should be a 5A favorite once again with both players leading the charge.
Stone Bureau Stone Bureau 6'0" | PG Calvary Christian Academy, Ft. Lauderdale | 2024 State FL / Nate Sasser Nate Sasser 6'6" | SG Suncoast | 2023 State #207 Nation FL – Suncoast
The Bureau/Sasser duo combined to average 20.2 points, 9.9 rebounds and 4.6 steals per game this season for Suncoast. Bureau is very quick in the backcourt with great awareness and vision. He dished out 37 assists and recorded 37 steals on the year. Sasser has great length at 6-foot-5 to be disruptive in passing lanes and be a force on the glass. He grabbed 51 rebounds (24 offensive) on the season. That kind of volume creates second chance opportunities for him near the rim.
Cameron Johnson Cameron Johnson 6'5" | SF Norland | 2022 State FL / Marcus Allen Marcus Allen 6'4" | SF West Orange | 2021 State FL – Miami Norland
Future conversations will continue to revolve around Marcus Allen Marcus Allen 6'4" | SF West Orange | 2021 State FL . The 6-foot-6 wing is quickly rising as one of the best players in South Florida. Johnson can score from all three levels and defends multiple positions. His early offer from Florida State proves his potential. The 6-foot-4 Johnson is a nice athlete that averaged 15.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game on 57 percent shooting from the field. Moreover, Johnson recorded 13 games in which he shot better than his season percentage. His 133 total rebounds emphasizes his athletic ability and length around the glass.
Faheim Meran Faheim Meran 6'5" | SF West Oaks | 2022 State FL / Deshawn Jean-Charles Deshawn Jean-Charles 6'6" | PF West Oaks | 2022 State FL – Miramar
The Patriots create a lot of mismatches on the floor with their starting lineup. Meran is a 6-foot-5 point guard with elite quickness that can play above or around his defender. Jean-Charles is a 6-foot-6 wing that can score inside 15 feet and finish in transition. In addition, his length also allows him to grab a high volume of rebounds. You will have a tough time scoring in the halfcourt with both players on the floor. There is just too much length and quickness to accumulate productive possessions against them. The pair recently earned offers from Texas Southern and Bradley University.
