From a competition standpoint, it should make for an interesting few years. Players will likely cross paths and compete in some of the area’s biggest games.
Let’s look into the list…
Jaylen Carey Jaylen Carey 6'8" | PF Westminster Academy | 2023 State #129 Nation FL – Westminster Academy
Carey is on the fast track to being the best player in South Florida. I defiantly think this will be the case by the time he is a senior. He is just too strong in the post and his mobility continues to improve. The ladder has allowed him to expand his game beyond the paint. How many 235-pound kids are connecting on 3-pointers from the top of the key? I also believe his bone crushing strength will be a problem late in games. Carey will wear you down and finish near the rim at a high rate. He looks to be the man in the frontcourt now with the transfer of Ben Midddlebrooks to Calvary Christian Academy.

Marvel Allen Marvel Allen 6'4" | SG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #46 Nation FL is already a 4-star recruit and ranked as the 38th best player in his class by 247Sports. The 6-foot-4 combo guard averaged 13.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and three assists for the 3A state champions. He has solid footwork and finesse when attacking the rim. I love his ability to finish with either hand and absorb contact. Allen also has a solid frame to play through traffic. I would like to see him improve his overall shot and perimeter shooting. Allen shot 29 percent (31-of-106) from deep this season. He will likely round out in this area and have the Eagles competing for another state championship. He holds offers from South Florida, LSU and Virginia Tech.
Carl Cherenfant Carl Cherenfant 6'4" | CG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #68 Nation FL – Calvary Christian
Cherenfant is a lengthy shooting guard that likes to play downhill. The 6-foot-5 two guard averaged ten points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game on 43 percent shooting from the field. He is crafty with plenty of quickness to get to the rim. Like Allen, I would like to see him improve his shooting. Cherenfant shot 25 percent (12-of-48) from deep. He looked impressive in the state final against Bishop McLaughlin Catholic with 18 points. I think Cherenfant can build on his tournament momentum into the summer and into next season. He holds offers from Western Kentucky and LSU.
Justin Johnson Justin Johnson 6'7" | PF Doral | 2023 #229 Nation FL – Doral Academy
Johnson’s stock got a big boost with a recent offer from Georgetown. The 6-foot-7 wing averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals on 47 percent shooting from the field. One area I would like to see him work on is his free-throw (60 percent) and perimeter (30 percent) shooting. Other than that, Johnson has tremendous size and athleticism as a dual-threat playmaker.
Jasai Miles Jasai Miles 6'5" | CG Miami Country Day | 2023 State #241 Nation FL – Miami Country Day
Jasai Miles Jasai Miles 6'5" | CG Miami Country Day | 2023 State #241 Nation FL has the frame and elite size (6’6) to be a high-major shooting guard. That combination helped Miami Country Day reach the Class 3A final four. Miles averaged 19.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game this season for the Spartans. Moreover, he shot 41 percent from the field and 31 percent from 3-point range. Those are two numbers that Miles could improve on. However, his natural athleticism makes him an efficient threat near the rim at this level. Look for Miles and the Spartans to be more consistent next season.
