Though you do not have to be the tallest player on the court to become a great rim protector, height is definitely an advantage in this realm and the best rim protectors make opposing players rethink their decision to drive into the paint to attempt and score. This list looks at the players that had the most blocks in the past season. Continue reading for a look at the top rim protectors in the 5A SIC.
Jack Payne Jack Payne 6'5" | SF Boise | 2022 State ID , Boise: Payne is not the biggest player on this list, but he led the 5A SIC in blocks last season while averaging just shy of 3 blocks per game. Payne makes great reads on the defensive end and has impressive timing when he jumps to block shots. Jack can time shot fakes and determine when a player is actually going to shoot before he leaves his feet. Additionally, a lot of Boise’s game plan funneled offensive players to the paint where they had to face Jack, and he won the majority of those battles.
Tyler Clayton, Mountain View: Tyler averaged nearly 1.5 blocks per game this season and did a great job of holding down the middle for Mountain View. Tyler has a lot of great athleticism that he can use to catch offensive players off guard. Clayton also likes to bait offensive players into thinking they have an open lane and an easy bucket before coming out of nowhere to block a shot from the opposite side of the key.
Ethan Pearce, Meridian: Ethan held down the middle as one of the key rim protectors for Meridian this past season on their way to a state championship. Ethan has a great feeling for how and when to time his jumps and he cleanly blocked a lot of shots this season. One of Ethan’s best skills is his ability to block shots while coming from help side and catching offensive players off guard.
