I saw the 6-foot-9 forward during his lone season with Northeast and believe he has a great shot of making the NBA one day. Marvel Allen Marvel Allen 6'4" | SG Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian | 2023 State #46 Nation FL out of Calvary Christian is the top player in this area at No.4 overall.
The South Florida region is well represented with 17 players inside the top 50.
To make it a bit of a challenge, I will highlight some prospects outside of that margin.
Derrick Edouard Derrick Edouard 6'3" | SF North Miami | 2023 State FL – North Miami (PH. 57)
Edouard was a prospect mentioned in our discussions before the rankings dropped. The 6-foot-3 shooting guard/small forward averaged just over 11 points per game on 43 percent shooting from the field last season. Moreover, Edouard went 42-of-120 (35 percent) from the perimeter. He brings a lot of length with long arms coming out of the backcourt. I believe Edouard uses this to his advantage on both ends of the floor. He made three or more 3-pointers in eight games. Furthermore, his uncanny ability to score from multiple areas is a major plus. Edouard will be a part of a strong group of guards for the Pioneers next season.
Kellen Cashman Kellen Cashman 6'3" | CG Monarch | 2023 FL – Monarch (PH. 113)
I saw Cashman way back as an eight grader with Zaire Wade and American Heritage – Plantation. I remember former head coach Fred Battle telling me that he would be a kid to watch in the future. That kind of praise and added experience is notable. The 6-foot-3 combo guard averaged 15.3 points, 8.6 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game last season for the Knights. Moreover, Cashman scored in double-figures in 13 of 14 contests. Against McArthur, he scored 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field. I like him at this spot with a margin to grow.
Jermaine Hunter Jermaine Hunter 5'10" | PG Jupiter Christian | 2023 FL – Jupiter Christian (PH. 120)
Hunter should have a bigger role with the graduation of RJ Morris RJ Morris 6'0" | CG Jupiter Christian | 2021 State FL and the transfer of 2022 Conner Weston Conner Weston 6'7" | SF Jupiter | 2022 State FL . The 5-foot-10 point guard averaged 5.8 points, 5.8 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game last season for the Eagles. Hunter is a nice on-ball defender with quick hands. He tallied two or more steals in ten games. His playmaking ability from the backcourt should take on greater importance next season. Hunter recorded 105 assists, including eight games with seven or more dimes. Do not sleep on his rebounding ability, either. Against Monsignor Pace, Hunter grabbed ten off the glass. He is also a very good student with a 3.7 GPA.
Marc Wendrow Marc Wendrow 6'1" | CG Miami Country Day | 2023 FL – Miami Country Day (PH. 162)
I have reason to believe that Wendrow will be a factor if the Spartans want to win a state championship in the future. Miami Country Day came up short last season with a loss to Calvary Christian in the Class 3A final four. The 6-foot-1 combo guard averaged 9.6 points and 2.9 assists on 46 percent shooting from the field last season. His splits from the perimeter (41 percent) are also very good. Wendrow could be the piece of the puzzle with 2022 Ryan Richardson and 2023 Jasai Miles Jasai Miles 6'5" | CG Miami Country Day | 2023 State #241 Nation FL .
Ashton Smith Ashton Smith 6'2" | PG Sagemont | 2023 State FL – Hallandale (PH. 109)
Smith could be in for a big junior season with the graduation of three seniors from the Chargers’ roster. The 6-foot-1 point guard averaged 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.1 steals and two assists per game last season. Against Mater Academy Charter (21-3), Smith had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists. The dual-threat playmaker added ten other games in double-figures. He will be Hallandale’s primary option and their team leader next season.
Ray Allen Jr. – Gulliver Prep (PH. 77)
Allen Jr. is part of a young group of talent at Gulliver Prep. The 6-foot-1 combo guard is an aggressive defender that will pressure you from baseline to baseline. He plays with a high motor and has an extreme work ethic. I think his defensive ability is a bit ahead of his offensive game at this point. However, Allen Jr. has athleticism and can attack the rack with consistency. Look for him to continue to improve his overall shooting. Allen Jr. received offers from UMass and Rutgers back in November. He is the son of NBA great Ray Allen.
