Continue ReadingA highly anticipated 2022 class has been updated, and this was our most difficult class yet. We added over 70 players to the class and saw plenty of shakeup from top to bottom. With as much talent that is in the class, it was a difficult list to compose, but we got it. Here we take a look at some guys that were asked to do everything for their team this season, and the numbers back it up.
Luke Hutto Luke Hutto 6'3" | SF Montrose | 2022 State CO – Montrose
Hutto is a player that we had known about for a few years now due to the fact that he is a three-year varsity starter that has brought plenty of wins to Montrose. Hutto has averaged double figures in scoring since the moment that he has entered high school, but these last two seasons has turned into one of the state’s most balanced and complete players. Hutto does everything for the Indians, and that translates to more victories. Hutto is the team’s best scorer and go-to option that can break a defender down and either get to his spots or put his teammates in positions to score. He is an elite playmaker that takes what the defense gives him and also leads the team in boards. The 6’3 do-it-all guard averaged 7.3 rebounds a game, grabs the board, and gets the break started, which catches the defense by surprise. He reads double teams, plays the right way, and is a high IQ player that had some explosive games as he led Montrose to an 18-1 overall record. He comes in at the No. 34 spot and makes an argument to rise.
Taveon Long Taveon Long 6'1" | CG Overland | 2022 State CO – Hinkley
Long is a player that made one of the biggest jumps in the state from one season to the next. Long went from a player coming off of injury and trying to find his way to a switch clicking and him dominating in each game. Win, lose or draw, Long was one of the most productive players in the conference, and that is a testament to the hard work he has put in when no one is looking. Long went from averaging 5.0 points and 5.2 rebounds to an explosive team-high of 17.5 points and 10.2 rebounds a game. Long finished with nine double-doubles in only 14 games, and although his team was not picking up the victories, was playing winning basketball. He’s a 6’2 hardworking guard that’s versatile and was catapulted into the go-to spot and adjusted quickly. His game is progressing as he’s learning on the fly, and he led his team in practically every category. As long as he continues to work on his game, he should be a player that stands out, and he comes in at No.39 in the class—an improvement from the last update.
Coby Jimenez Coby Jimenez 6'2" | CG Horizon | 2022 State CO – Horizon
Jimenez is a long and smooth wing that is coming into his own, and his ability to play multiple positions is what separates him. Jimenez is the quiet assassin that goes in and does the job. He does not have to stand out or have the ball in his hands to make winning plays but play his game at his own pace, and we saw a big jump from him this season. When Jimenez played, he altered the outcome of the game and the way that the team played. Jimenez averaged 12.1 points and 8.1 rebounds a game, and it looks like he’s getting comfortable with his 6’3 long and slender body. Jimenez is a playmaker that does what is asked of him but handles pressure well and makes the right decision with the ball in his hands. He is an elite passer, rebounds in bunches, and scores both inside and out. He’s the calm for that Horizon team that is full of solid guards and is steadily improving. He’s a top-50 player in the class.
Dominic Marrujo Dominic Marrujo 5'9" | PG Prairie View | 2022 State CO – Prairie View
Marrujo is a small guard with a big game and is a giant slayer. He does not get pushed around; he handles his own and is a microwave scorer that can get going. Marrujo is an elite ballhandler with a tight handle and also is crafty around the rim. He breaks down the first line of defense and can finish amongst the trees. He’s a confident shooter, and while the efficiency was down from deep, all he needs to see is one shot fall. When he’s hot, the offense seems to flow as he gets others involved, plays on and off the ball and is a leader on the floor. Marrujo has been in the spotlight since the moment that he has entered high school, and with that, has a mature game. Marrujo is a great on-ball defender, plays the passing lanes, and continues to work on his game. He does it all for the Thunderhawks and plays above his size.
