The rest of the roster is filled with guys who have potential but haven’t played a ton of varsity minutes. It will take some time for them to find their rhythm, but they have some solid talent to work with. Here’s an early look at the Kelso Highlanders for the 2021 Season.
Mike Foust | 6’3 SG | 2022
Foust is a new addition to the squad this year. He is a big guard with a solid frame which is good because he will have to shoulder a huge load for Kelso to be successful this season. At his previous school, he was never the go-to guy, so it will be fun to see him transition into that role for the Highlanders; he has the skillset to do it. Offensively, Mike is good at straight-line drives. He knows how to use his body to help create space for a short jumper in the paint. He can also shoot the spot-up 3. Defensively, he can guard multiple positions and is a solid rebounder. Look for Mike to have a breakout season for Kelso this year.
Ethan Mitchell | 6’3 CG | 2023
Mitchell, the other dynamic wing, will have a ton of responsibility too. Mitchell played quality varsity minutes last year as a freshman and had some breakout games throughout the year. With a year under his belt already, he will be looking to have a big sophomore season. Ethan is like a Swiss army knife. He has a little bit of everything in his game. He can finish at the rim and does a good job of drawing fouls. His 3 could be more consistent, but he shoots it well enough to keep defenses honest. His best skill is his playmaking for others though. His vision combined with his size makes him dangerous, especially in transition. Mitchell will be a huge factor in Kelso’s success this season.
Tyler Hays | 5’9 PG | 2022
Tyler is one of those hard-nosed, scrappy PGs that all coaches love. He plays with a motor and loves to compete. Although he doesn’t have a ton of varsity experience, I think he will settle into his role just fine. Tyler is at his best when he is attacking to get in the lane. He does a good job of playing off two feet and being patient to find teammates or an opening for himself. He has a solid middy pull-up too. Defensively is where he can add the most value for Kelso. He gets up into the ball and plays physical on-ball D.
Chase Johnson | 6’2 SG | 2022
Johnson just wants to win, and he does all the little things that contribute to it. He battles for rebounds, he dives for loose balls, he runs the floor, and he talks on D. He doesn’t care about scoring, but if given the opportunity he will quietly give you 8-12 points. He loves the corner 3— if he was an NBA 2K player, he’d for sure have the “corner specialist” badge.
Hayden Yore | 5’10 PG | 2024
Yore is oozing with potential. He may not be ready right away, but as the season progresses he will get his shot. He has a shifty handle and a crafty layup package to go with it for when he blows by defenders. He can also shoot the 3, both off the catch and off the dribble. If he can buy in defensively I think his name will be called sooner rather than later. Remember the name, he will be a big-time player in the 2024 class.
