Continue ReadingThis past Saturday the CheckRock League, one of the Delaware Valley’s most competitive summer runs, hosted its 1st Annual CheckRock 40 for 40 Invitational at the 76ers Fieldhouse.
This invite only event featured elite 2021 through 2024 prospects from various states. The 2021 and 2022 prospects were grouped into teams as where the 2023 s and 2024s. The event featured a round robin game format followed by Top 20 showcase games for each of the two divisions.
Below is a review of some of the 2023 prospects from Pennsylvania who participated in the 1st Annual CheckRock 40 for 40 Invitational.
Anthony Finkley Anthony Finkley 6'6" | SF Roman Catholic | 2023 State PA – 6’6” / West Catholic / Point-Forward: Finkley (aka “Antman”) is an extremely versatile, athletic baller who is mobile enough to play all 5 positions. He showed good handles, excellent court vision / passing skills and can drain the 3-ball. That skill set allows Finkley to excel in a hybrid point-forward role. Which caught some of the guards at this event by surprise. As a bonus to all these perimeter skills, Finkley is a solid threat on the interior. He holds offers from Saint Joseph’s and DePaul University. After another spring/summer of playing with K-Low Elite we expect more offers to come pouring in.
Nate Hoter – 5’11” / Abraham Lincoln / Point Guard: For a Class of 2023 prospect, Hoter is a very complete lead guard. He displayed all the tools college coaches love to see in a floor general, but what really stood out was his dribbling skills. Hoter owns ball-on-a-string level handles which enable him to blow by defenders, get into the paint and score at the rim. His jump shot also must be respected by defenders.
Destined McCray – 5’10” / Conwell-Egan / Point Guard: To witness a prospect play unselfish, pass first basketball at an event of this nature is a rare sight. So McCray’s court vision and passing ability really stood out. He also displayed filthy handles, the ability to score at the rim and a nice jumper. Look for McCray to have a major impact in the Philadelphia Catholic League next winter.
Fazl Oshodi – 6’1’’/ Roman Catholic / Combo Guard: Oshodi hit perimeter shots consistently, but it was his speed and quickness in transition that really impressed. When he gets out on the fast break, this prospect is an absolute blur. Oshodi exudes a tough, aggressive vibe that standouts. Oshodi plays for Philly Pride during the spring/summer.
Shawn Simmons – 6’5” / Life Center Academy (NJ) / Wing. The former Friends Central (Phila., PA) standout is a Philly native, so we are going to include him in this article. Simmons (15 ppg. and 6 rpg. this winter) scored from all three levels and plays above the rim. His athleticism and incredible length make him a force on the glass. Simmons knocked down jumpers from the mid-range out to three ball territory. Still, when you watch Simmons from the stands, it’s his ability to explode to the rim that makes your jaw drop. Simmons plays for Team Durant on the grassroots circuit. Holds offers from Butler, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Saint Joe’s, La Salle, Temple and Maryland.
