Both of the Montbello (Far Northeast Warriors) boys showed up in their game against Hinkley on Wednesday evening with junior Isaiah Poindexter Isaiah Poindexter 6'1" | CG Montbello | 2022 State CO erupting for 30 points and senior Gianno Flores Gianno Flores 5'9" | CG FNE Warriors | 2021 State CO matching him. To have both players erupt for almost 60 points and barely edging out the Thunderbirds goes to show you the type of effort it was. The Warriors won 89-82 on the day and needed those two players to step up, and they did—a solid day for them both.
Sean Evans Sean Evans 6'3" | CG Legend | 2021 State CO – Legend
Albeit in defeat, what Sean Evans Sean Evans 6'3" | CG Legend | 2021 State CO was able to accomplish on a team that is best known for their defense the past couple of years was impressive. Legend only put up 59 points in the game, and Evans had half of them. The versatile wing put up a game-high 35-points in the game and showed that he was not going out without a fight. He got cooking from deep as he hit five 3-pointers, was attacking the paint and converting, and really had it going on offensively. Rock Canyon keyed in on him and still had a tough time slowing down and his big day needs to be highlighted.
Garrett Rogers Garrett Rogers 5'11" | PG Columbine | 2021 State CO – Columbine
Castle View might’ve won the war, but they had their hands full as one of the top shooters in the state put on an offensive clinic. Columbine fell 69-60 but the 5’11 sharpshooter stole the show. Rogers finished with a season-high 32 points and he was letting it fly – from everywhere. Rogers was being keyed in on the moment that he crossed half-court and was still able to his eight 3-pointers in the game. It was not just the fact that he was sinking them from deep, but the efficiency is what really stood out. Rogers went 8-11 from deep and his teammates knew to find him. Once his feet are set, might as well get back on defense but Rogers has added the ability to shoot off of the dribble as well as coming off of screens shot ready. He also dished out a game-high five assists which means he was essentially a part of nearly every single Rebel basket and that deserves some attention.
Keenan Rykovich – Loveland
Loveland needed every basket in their 82-78 battle with Poudre and their leading scorer to put up a new season-high to secure the victory. Rykovich averages 13.8 points a game on the year and seen that spike when he set a new career-high with 29-points which led to victory. He was surgical in the game and was uber-efficient in his approach. He was 10-15 in the game only hit one 3-pointer. He got to his spots on offense inside and also managed to get to the FT line early and often. Loveland will need him to continue playing well and he is a player that jumped onto our radars after a solid season.
Gavin Poxson Gavin Poxson 6'4" | SF Legacy | 2021 State CO – Legacy
Poxson has been erupting for big game after big game. He has quietly been on a tear over the past few weeks and saw his best game of the season in a big win over Rocky Mountain. Poxson finished with a new career-high of 31 points and set the tone early on. He went 11-16 from the game and that kind of efficiency tells how easy of a game it was. Poxson has a great feel for the game, can play with the ball in his hands or operate without the ball, and plays with a purpose. He makes intentional moves and can space the floor with his outside shot. Poxson knocked down four 3-pointers in the game and lived at the FT line. He catches a rhythm and rides it and teammates know when he is on to feed him and they did on Wednesday.
Colton Gillingham Colton Gillingham 6'0" | CG Greeley West | 2021 State CO – Greeley West
Greeley West might not make the postseason, but with the way that Colton Gillingham Colton Gillingham 6'0" | CG Greeley West | 2021 State CO has played all season long, they have been one of the toughest teams in the entire state. The 6’0 point guard put together his best game of the entire season and set a school record in doing so. He put up 47-points in the game and that was the icing on the cake on a season where he has erupted for 40-points, 30 points and 29 points as well. Gillingham is a certified bucket that plays hard no matter what the scoreboard is. He is a tenacious defender, gives you his best shot and competes on every single possession. He is one of the state leaders in points and has had a solid season despite the teams downfalls and you cannot expect more out of your leader but to keep fighting.
Sam Howery Sam Howery 6'1" | PG St. Mary’s | 2022 State CO — St. Mary’s
Not much to say here, he played on a Wednesday, he racked up another triple-double, he led his team to victory. This time it was 27 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. Howery will have to work on his efficiency and taking the right shots, but one thing you are going to get from this standout point guard is production. Howery continue to rack up triple double’s like it’s nothing, he is a selfish leader and as long as they have him leading the way they will be the favored team as he brings it all to the table.
