Especially when you have guys waiting for certain star players to graduate and move on. You also have guys who put up great seasons for their high school teams who could explode on everyone’s radar with a solid grassroot run. We are going to look at some wing players who may be flying under the radar heading into the grassroot season.
Wesley Oakley, 6’3, Hays High School: Oakley was a contributing member of a highly successful Hays squad that made a deep undefeated playoff run that was cut just short of their final goal. Playing some spot forward minutes as well off the bench, Oakley showed his versatility especially in the rebounding and defensive areas where he can bang with and guard multiple positions. On offense he was always ready to knock down open shots from both the perimeter and in the mid range game and could be used as a zone buster. He was a steady contributor averaging 3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal per game while only committing 6 turnovers the whole season. He shot 40% from the 3 point line as well.
Jimmy Dorsey Jimmy Dorsey 6'6" | SG Wellsville | 2022 State KS , 6’5, Wellsville: He put up a couple of monster numbers scoring wise this season, and led the way for a pretty good Wellsville team this season. He has the size, shooting ability, and versatility to really contribute on a bigger stage as we head into the spring. If his game develops over the spring and summer, look out for his high school season next year, because he is already tough for his in season opponents to match up with.
Corbin Dozier, 6’4, Olathe South: Dozier is a versatile player whos length and skill allows him to fulfill a ton of roles on the offensive side of the floor and he can guard multiple positions. He gets up and blocks shots from the help side, can keep guards in front, and can clean up the offensive glass. His ability to catch and shoot the ball with his length is his most lethal weapon on the offensive end of the floor, but he is comfortable finishing in the painted area as well. Averages of 10 points, 5 rebounds, and a block per game on the year.
Jake Fritz Jake Fritz 6'2" | SG Wamego | 2022 State KS , 6’2, Wamego: One of the more improved perimeter players as the season progressed, Fritz lit up the nets in the second half of the year and really put his name more on the map as we head into the spring season. He averaged 11 points per game on the year on 45% shooting from behind the three point line. He rebounded the ball well too averaging about 5 rebounds per game. His ability on the defensive side of the floor guarding guards and smaller forwards improved as well, which helped Wamego become more versatile of a team in the latter half of the season. Fritz’s shooting ability should be on high alert this spring and summer.
Mikey Pauley Mikey Pauley 6'4" | SF Blue Valley Northwest | 2022 State KS , 6’4, Blue Valley Northwest: Pauley is another junior who should see an increased role next season after being a great energy and toughness type of role player for an extremely successful BVNW team that only lost 2 games on the season. He can get up and finished at the rim in transition, in which he runs the floor really well, and has a great athletic body type who moves well both vertically and horizontally. He can guard multiple positions, and his length helps him make up ground if beaten off the dribble by quick guards. He shot nearly 60% from the field this season as he was pretty efficient with his opportunities on the floor. He brings a lot to the table outside of the statistical output. He is ultra athletic and can get up and block shots in transition, and in the offensive transition game he can finish lobs, dunk the ball, and put on a show running the floor.
