Orleans Comes From Behind
Early on Tuesday evening, it was looking like we could have an upset on our hands. The young but tough Orleans (16-5) team was down to a Shoals (11-11) group that had come so close to upsetting them just a couple weeks earlier in overtime.
Orleans has been setup to be one of the stronger teams in Southern Indiana the next couple years and was looking as a competitive team to take on Loogootee on Friday night. That was almost ruined. Shoals had held Orleans to just 17 points in the first half and had a 6 points lead.
Slowly but surely, Orleans came back and scored 21 in the 3rd quarter to take a 38-36 lead. Shoals kept it close but in the final minute, a 4-point lead got stretched out to 10 as they won 60-50. Now, we get that coveted Orleans vs. Loogootee matchup on Friday followed by North Daviess vs. Barr-Reeve game.
Mostly Chalk On Tuesday
The one thing across the state we saw was that there were not a lot of upsets. Morristown almost got upset but still beat out Oldenburg. Bethesda Christian and Indianapolis Tindley kept their records going in the right direction in Indianapolis, and Liberty Christian made it look easy against Wes-Del.
Most of the Sectional favorites on Tuesday night had the outcomes they wanted. However, some really struggled to get those easily. Morristown was really, really close to getting kicked out in the first round. Tri-Central really had to hold on late against Daleville.
The few upsets we did see were not really that big. International lost to Bethesda but International has been hot and cold all year. They could have gone either way on any particular night. Rock Creek Academy got out early but Christian Academy always seems to find a way to be competitive and they did enough to knock them off.
This wasn’t a crazy night but should set the stage for some really, really good games on Friday night in the state.
Quick Hitters:
- Kouts starts their state title run as one of the handful of teams to score over 100 on the night, 112-45 over Hammond Science & Tech.
- Seton Catholic, who has had a tough up and down year, gets a first round win over Randolph Southern , 74-65.
- Argos and Triton, the two favorites in the Sectional 50 bracket, both get opening round wins moving towards a potential matchup in the Sectional Championship game.
- Lakewood Park cruises against Hamilton. Now things get interesting with no teams in Sectional 51 with a winning record.
- Pioneer keeps winning in Sectionals and gets past Frontier. Caston also pulls out a win over South Newton by 10 points. North White is waiting for both of them, though.
- Southwood gets an easy win over Southern Wells, 88-39. Not sure if there is another team that can keep it competitive in this Sectional.
- Faith Christian gets a tough win over Clinton Central and now faces a Lafayette Central Catholic team on Friday where, you would have to think, this is the first time they have had a better record than LCC.
- Lanesville made it through he first round with a 9 point win over New Washington. Now they get a slightly easier matchup on Friday against South Central (2-17) before a potential Sectional Championship game on Saturday.
- West Washington and Trinity Lutheran both get through unscathed in Sectional 62. West Washington gets a much easier Medora team while Trinity Lutheran gets to face a very difficult Edinburgh group.
- Evansville Day escapes Northeast Dubois. Not an easy thing to do. However, that might be their toughest matchup of the Sectional. No slip ups and a possible run to Saturday?
