Yesterday we revealed Part I of our Class of 2022 prospects from the Philly suburbs that posted a stellar 2020-21 season. The Class of 2022 is a deep group of juniors who already owns significant varsity experience and thus they had major expectations placed on their shoulders this winter. That was not be a problem for this group as these are elite prospects and a few of them are on the verge of becoming national stars.
Below is Part II of our list of 2022 prospects in suburban Philadelphia who had a significant impact for their varsity squad during the 2020-21 season.
Sam Brown Sam Brown 6'3" | CG Lower Merion | 2023 State PA – 6’3” / LaSalle CHS / Combo Guard: Brown is a superb athlete who is also a major DI football recruit as a running back. On the basketball court, as a sophomore Brown established himself as a very solid guard for LaSalle. Then during a Covid shortened 2020 spring/summer AAU season, Brown produced a number of breakout performances for K-Low Elite. That high level of play on the court carried over to this winter where the doing everything floor general boasts a stat line of 14.5 ppg.; 5 rpg.; 4 apg. and a 2.5 to 1 TO/Assist ratio. Brown can score the rock at all 3-levels and is an elite distributor on the break or in the half-court. Additionally, with his height and 200-pound frame, Brown has no trouble playing bully ball against opposing guards. A couple of his highlights from this season include 24 points vs Father Judge, 18 points and 4 dimes vs Devon Prep and 17 points vs Roman Catholic.
Jake Hsu Jake Hsu 6'0" | PG Germantown Academy | 2022 State PA – 6’1” / Junior / Germantown Academy / Combo Guard: A two sport star for Germantown Academy (also plays WR on football team), many have labeled Hsu as a “freak athlete”. The combo-guard has been in the starting lineup for the basketball team for nearly two full seasons and has served as a great complimentary player for GA megastar Jordan Longino Jordan Longino 6'5" | CG Germantown Academy | 2021 State #67 Nation PA . When he is running the point, Hsu can get to the paint whenever he wants for buckets. Yet he remains under control and owns great court vision (3 apg.), so when he runs into trouble on his way to the rim, Hsu can easily kick out to an open teammate on the perimeter. An excellent do-everything player for GA (4.8 rpg.), in 2020-21 Hsu showed he can also score the ball when the Patriots need it. In this Covid shortened season Hsu still averaged 12.8 points per contest, shot 44% from the field and 38% from three. His spotlight performances from this winter included 17 points in a win for the Patriots over Episcopal Academy; 17 points on four 3PM vs. Haverford and 15 points in a victory against Penn Charter. Longino graduates this spring, so Hsu will step into the No. 1option role for GA next season.
David Olinger David Olinger 6'5" | PF Phil-Mont Christian Academy | 2022 State PA – 6’4” / Phil-Mont Christian Academy / Small Forward: A two year varsity starter, Olinger produced a breakout season in 2020-21. An excellent mid-range shooter and post player, Olinger was good for 14.8 points and 11 rebounds per night. Olinger showed signs of a developing 3-point and if he can hit from behind the arc consistently, this kid will then have all the skills needed to be a great stretch-4 style player. His ability to trigger the fast break with an outlet pass is Kevin Love-ish. At the other end, Olinger is an excellent team defender and rebounder. He led Phil-Mont Christian in rebounds per game (11), assists per game (3.5), blocked shots per game (2) and steals per game (2). Olinger had a season filled with outstanding games, but a couple ridiculous efforts deserve mention here: 25 points and 8 boards vs Jenkintown back in early February; 16 points and 14 rebounds to go along with 5 blocks against Roberto Clemente Charter; and finally – 19 points, 11 rebounds and 6 dimes in the District 1-1A title game win over Jenkintown.
Aaron Sanders Aaron Sanders 6'1" | PG Bensalem | 2022 State PA – 6’2” / Bensalem / Point Guard: As a sophomore Sanders was the do-everything floor general for a Bensalem squad that won 19 games, advanced to the semifinals of the District 1 6A playoffs and qualified for the PIAA 6A state tournament. In 2021, Sanders took his game up a level and hopefully college recruiters were watching online. Moore is an elite level distributor, especially on the fast break. When Bensalem needed him to score, Sanders (15 ppg.) attacked in transition, splashed home 3-pointers or used dribble penetration to score the rock in close. This winter he showed that he can be an excellent rebounding guard (5.4 rpg.) and his defense was significantly improved. In short, Moore has really developed into a tremendous all-around player. He posted 17 points and 7 rebounds vs. Abington; 19 points (3 threes) vs Wissahickon and 15 (3 threes) vs North Penn. When Sanders hits the grassroots circuit this spring/summer with Philly Pride AAU, we expect the college offers to come pouring in.
Tyler Seward Tyler Seward 6'2" | PG Archbishop Carroll | 2021 State PA – 6’2” / Archbishop Carroll / Combo Guard: The former Haverford School (PA) starter continues to play a physical style of ball that has enables him to get to his spots and score at the tin (10 ppg.). Moore can drain the mid-range jumper and is an outstanding rebounding guard (4.5 rpg.). When you watch Moore in person an element of his game that immediately jumps out is his elite quickness on the defensive end. He is a menace as an on-ball defender and slashes through passing lanes for deflections and steals. Moore’s outstanding first season in the Philadelphia Catholic League has included games of 18 points and 6 rebounds vs. Neumann-Goretti; 16 pts vs St. Joes’ Prep; 13 points and 7 boards vs Father Judge and then 15 points in a rematch win over Father Judge. If / when Moore adds a consistent 3-point shot to his skill set, he will become a potential All-PCL level player for Archbishop Carroll.
Later this week we will post Part III of this suburban Philadelphia Class of 2022 prospects series.
