Some of the state’s best players were on the court. Here’s how they did:
Isaac Patterson Isaac Patterson 6'6" | PF Overland Park | 2021 State KS , senior, Blue Valley North:
The 6-foot-5 wing, so smooth and coordinated, was the star of the game for the Mustangs. The team is loaded, but the long and athletic Patterson did everything Saturday. He was efficient on the offensive end, hitting 4-6 from the field and 11-12 from the line. He defended the Campus stars effectively and was the game’s leading rebounder with 13. Patterson will surprise with his athleticism and burst, and can get to the hoop regularly.
Nikko Taylor Nikko Taylor 6'6" | SF Blue Valley North | 2021 State KS , senior, Blue Valley North:
On most any other team, Taylor would stand out as a superstar. But he’s a team-first forward who makes passing his best trait. He did lead the team in attempts Saturday, but he’s not a guy who hogs shots. He hit 8-13 for 17 points in the final. He’s a big guy with great body control and agility. He’s a star on the football field headed to Hutchinson Community College. But basketball might still be in his future, because he’s got the skills.
Kernan Bundy Kernan Bundy 6'3" | SG Blue Valley North | 2022 State KS , junior, Blue Valley North:
Bundy is a star in the making. His skills are catching up to his athleticism, and he was big for the Mustangs down the stretch. He hit 5-9 from the field, including two 2’s, in the semi-finals against Lawrence. Then he knocked down 4-9 from the field and 4-4 from the line in the championship. The guy is a terror in the open floor, can shoot it from deep, and defends with quick hands and feet.
Stevie Strong Jr Stevie Strong Jr 6'1" | PG Campus | 2021 State KS , senior, Campus:
Coming over from a Kansas City, Missouri school, Strong made his presence known in the Kansas playoffs. His club came up short in the final, but Strong finished with 26 points. He took 22 shots to get there, but he was his team’s best hope to keep up with the Mustangs.
Sterling Chapman Sterling Chapman 6'4" | CG Campus | 2021 State KS , senior, Campus:
One of the most talented and dynamic seniors in the state, Chapman was held to just 10 points in the final, but he paced the Colts in rebounds with 9. The returning 6A first teamer led the Colts with 19.1 points and 12.1 boards this year. The 6-foot-5 senior is big and strong, athletic and can defend a variety of positions.
Jayden Hall, senior, Campus:
Though he didn’t capture a ton of headlines this year, Hall was an integral part of the Colts’ program. He helped the Colts stay close in the final, netting 12 points, exactly his average for the season. He’s quick, sees the floor, and provides some offensive explosiveness. As a complement to Strong, he added 3 assists and 2 steals per contest this year.
