Continue ReadingHanover was hardly challenged in its roll to the championship in the lowest classification. In fact, the Wildcats only played a couple of games this season that ended in less than double-digit margins. It was an amazing improvement over the 12-11 record a year ago. Like Olpe, Hanover doubled up, winning the football championship in the fall and the basketball title in the winter.
Here are a few players who stood out in the 1A Div. 2 championship game, with the focus on the seniors:
Emmitt Jueneman Emmitt Jueneman 6'1" | SF Hanover | 2022 State KS , Keagan Dimler, Philip Doebele, juniors, Hanover:
The champions were led by a junior Emmitt Jueneman Emmitt Jueneman 6'1" | SF Hanover | 2022 State KS , and Dimler developed into a stud as well. The Wildcats return several juniors with a chance to repeat next year. Emmitt Juneman didn’t put up impressive stats in the final game, but he’s the most athletic and polished of the team. Dimler led the team with 18 points in the last game. Doebele had a nice junior year and will be counted on a lot more next season.
Jacob Jueneman, senior, Hanover:
The 6-foot-4 senior was a workhorse all year for Hanover. In the finale, he hit 4-6 from the field, and 3-3 from the line for 11 points. He also led all rebounders with 9. His size, consistency and toughness will be tough to replace.
Blake Hynek, senior, Hanover:
Another 6-foot-4 post, Hynek helped the Wildcats overwhelm their opponents with size and physicality. He was huge with 18 points in the semifinal win over Beloit-St. John’s, than produced 10 points in the final. He was probably the Wildcats’ second-best player all season, scoring more than 12 points in the majority of their games.
Zach Stucky, senior, Elyria Christian:
The 5-foot-9 senior earned honorable mention in 1A last year. He was a leader for the Eagles, tossing in 10 points in the loss to Hanover, following 14 in the semi-finals against Waverly. He showed his ability to get to the line, and to knock down free throws once there. He hit 6-6 in each of the last two games. He’s been a key cog for the Eagles for four years, and his playmaking ability will be tough to replace. He scored 16 in the quarterfinals against Pawnee Heights.
Josef Hobson, senior Elyria Christian:
Hobson led the Eagles in scoring in the championship with 13. The 5-foot-8 senior showed his aggressiveness with the ball and his ability to penetrate. He’s a trouble-maker at the defensive end, trying to make steals and turn them into fast break opportunities. He had 10 points in both the quarterfinal and semi-final round.
