The all-around 6-foot-2, 185-pound Sherwood senior is one of the state’s best outside shooters on the court but he’s also an elite javelin thrower on the track. He’s considering options in both at the college level and his love for basketball has certainly been a focus for himself the past twelve months.
“It’s been tough and for a long time, it’s been all that we can do on our own,” Krauel said. “Just lifting and shooting whenever we can, outdoors, indoors, mornings, snow, whatever it is. I’ve just been trying to get prepared for the season.”
Krauel noted that he has focused a lot on building muscle, but also improving his first step and fine-tuning a quicker release on his outside shot. With the graduation of Jamison Guerra Jamison Guerra 5'11" | CG Sherwood | 2020 State OR , Krauel will also shift over to play more point guard and he’s ready for the challenge.
“We’re a lot smaller this year, so if you get (the ball), just go and bring it up,” Krauel said. “We’re going to try and get it up as fast as we can.”
Recruiting has continued to be on Krauel’s mind as well. Bushnell and Pacific have offered him the opportunity to do both track and basketball, but he’s also picked up scholarship offers from Northern Arizona and Montana for his javelin skills. Krauel hopes to take some campus visits once the NCAA dead period is lifted at the end of May. He’s keeping all his options open but does appear to be leaning in one direction.
“My dream right now, if there’s anything that I could do, is to be on scholarship with one of those track teams and then be a walk-on hooper,” Krauel said. “I could just be a role guy, just D up in practice. Throwing javelin is a commitment, but I’ve been doing both (track and basketball) my whole life so I know I can do both in college. But I’m just trying to go with the flow and stay ready for whatever opportunity.”
Sherwood finished last season one step away from making the state tournament. While Krauel isn’t ready to say that the Bowmen will match or even surpass that goal, he does feel there will be good days ahead for him and the team.
“I think we’re going to be good – we’ve always been a shooting team but I think this year it’s going to be even better,” Krauel said. “We have shooters at every position on the floor and I think we’re going to be a tough matchup. We’re going to be fast, aggressive, pressing, and will cause a lot of chaos on defense.”
Krauel currently ranks as the #27 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
