The gritty 5-foot-10, 155-pound point guard is coming off a breakout junior season at Cleveland and is looking forward to a big final year. He’s aiming to play college ball and is doing the best he can with what he’s been given until practice can officially start back up again.
“It’s been rough not knowing what to expect during these times, but one thing that has stayed consistent for me is going to the park and getting as many shots up as I can,” Mesulam said. “Whenever I can get into a gym or a weight room, I do. I also just watch a ton of college and NBA games and just try to pick up and add different types of things from players games.”
Outside shooting is something Mesulam proved he can do last season. He ended up leading all of 6A in three-point shooting percentage at just over 53 percent. As he has continued to keep that up, Mesulam has also been honing in on other parts of his game for improvement.
“Basketball wise I really have been putting in a lot of time on change of pace and footwork,” Mesulam said. “Being a smaller guard I always need to improve on those things. Strength wise I’ve been working a lot on my lower body trying to get my vertical up and get my quickness to a higher level than it was last season.”
A solid student with a 3.3 GPA, Mesulam has attracted interest from some schools, notably Whitworth. He notes that he’s made a visit up to campus and has been able to watch the team practice. Mesulam is keeping all of his options open though and is also considering a different but well-traveled path for Oregon high school standouts.
“I put together a season tape and sending them out to a lot of local JUCOs in Oregon and Washington,” Mesulam said. “I think the JUCO route would be good for me right now due to me just getting my name out there this past season. I think I could develop a lot at a school for 2 years and then go to a 4-year school after.”
For now, he’s staying focused on the next couple of months once the Warriors are cleared to practice together indoors and then the season in May.
“I’m super hyped for this year’s team. We surprised a lot of people last year and I think we’re gonna take another leap this year. Not sure if there is gonna be a postseason so right now I wanna focus on fighting for a league title. Which I think with this year’s roster is very possible.”
Mesulam currently ranks as the #67 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
