Playoff Central. Drew Sagedahl Drew Sagedahl 6'0" | SG Bold | 2021 State MN and Kooper Vaughn Kooper Vaughn 6'0" | PG St. Charles | 2021 State MN will be teammates at SJU next season and when they get there they can swap stories of opening night playoff masterpieces.
Sagedahl led BOLD to a 76-62 win over Sleepy Eye scoring 43 points. Drew not only scored 43 and led his team to the win, he also broke the school scoring record by two points. Sagedahl made 18 of 29 shots including five threes plus pulled in seven boards. And he did this coming off of a team two week hiatus because of a covid outbreak! BOLD next faces Sleepy Eye – St. Mary’s tomorrow night.
For the second time this season Kooper scored over 60 or more points. Last night his team needed every one of his 61 points to earn the win over Triton in overtime. Kooper hit seven threes and scored 13 points in overtime to lift his team to a five point win. Vaughn and the Saints are at Lake City on Friday.
Upset City. Wabasha-Kellogg won their fourth game of the season last night beating Spring Grove 38-36 in the 12/5 seed upset. Spring Grove came into the contest 13-3 but the Falcons pulled off the biggest upset of the playoff so far with the one score win. Sophomore Parker Springer hit four threes for Wabasha-Kellogg lead the team to the win. Spring Grove missed a three at the buzzer.
The Big Stage. The game of the night tonight looks to be St. Paul Highland Park (10-2) against Holy Angels (7-10). The Stars haven’t had the season they had hoped to have but there is talent there and they’ve defeated DeLaSalle this year so they are capable. Highland Park just beat St. Paul Central in overtime earning them a share of the St. Paul City Conference title (both teams are 10-2). Highland Park is a balanced team but 6-foot-4 senior Joey Kottke is their go-to guy (16.4 a game). The Stars will counter with 6-foot-5 Bryce Boyd Bryce Boyd 6'4" | SF Holy Angels | 2021 State MN who is scoring a dozen a game at 6-foot-5.
Our big stage game previewed yesterday was Goodhue versus La Crescent. Goodhue won the game convincingly 71-53. Dayne Wojcik Dayne Wojcik 6'4" | C Goodhue | 2022 State MN – who had an All State 16u summer in 2020 – led Goodhue with 23 points.
Name to Watch. Watch Northfield sophomore Soren Richardson this evening as 8-9 Northfield faces 12-5 Rochester Century. Soren didn’t play when Century knocked off Northfield by four points just two weeks ago. Now Century faces Northfield with seniors standouts Karsten Clay Karsten Clay 6'0" | PG Northfield | 2021 State MN and Kip Schetnan plus Richardson. Century is still the deeper team coming in. Jaden Wysocki Jaden Wysocki 6'6" | PF Rochester Century | 2022 State MN is having a great year and Northfield wasn’t able to slow him the first game (scored 20).
Tip of the Hat to the Career. I feel like one of the best success stories of this past nine months if Kegan Heiderscheidt Kegan Heiderscheidt 6'7" | SF Sleepy Eye | 2021 State MN of Sleepy Eye. Kegan is a 6-foot-7 guard that was a 6-foot-7 do everything player at Sleepy Eye. I’m sure pushing the boundaries of a quadruple-double at times won’t be needed at SMSU but it was fun tracking them. Number assortments of 41/7/7/6 followed by 20/7/6/5 then 32/10/9/4 and 39/12/8/5, it became oddly normal to see them. Kegan will leave Sleepy Eye as the school’s second all time leading scorer.
