Some of the top talent from Northern and Southern California, and Nevada took part in the two-day event. I was able to focus on the players from the Class of 2024, and here’s a look at some of the top big men who stood out over the course of the weekend.
1. Javares Reid Javares Reid 6'9" | C Rosemary Anderson Prep | 2024 State OR – Coronado (NV)
Reid is a big man prospect with very high upside who played with West Coast Select. He establishes position in the post and he calls for the ball. He makes decisive moves around the rim, keeping the defense on their feet. He can pass out of the post well, something a lot of older players don’t really know how to do. He’s mobile for a big, he runs he floor well in transition. Has range out to the three-point line. He also shoots free-throws well. Defensively he’s an interior anchor who blocks shots.
2. Malachi Richardson Malachi Richardson 6'5" | PF Losee | 2024 State NV – Mojave (CA)
Richardson also has some very high upside. He helped lead Progress Feel Best Elite to an undefeated first day on Saturday. What stood out the most to me was his defense. He blocks everything that comes near the rim. He has the quickness to keep up with slashers and meet them at the rim. Offensively, he has good footwork and finishes strong inside. He’s a good rebounder who boxes out pretty well. He’s just got to be a little more careful and decisive in the paint.
3. Rider Bryan – West Coast Select (NV)
Bryan certainly has the tools to develop into a solid big man. He’s very mobile and he fills the lane well on the break. What stood out to me was his rebounding. He’s a solid offensive rebounder and gets second shot opportunities. He follows missed shots well. He’s got a nice drop step and can use the glass well to finish. He’s also got to be a little bit quicker when making a move in the paint. Developing a little more patience in the post would go a long way in improving his game.
4. Maurice Lynch – Cali Anthony Elite
Maurice played alongside his brother Tyrese and while Tyrese was more of a wing, Maurice looked more like a big man, albeit a versatile one. He has a pretty solid back to the basket game and he can also face up and shoot from the midrange. He’s a good offensive rebounder who uses his body well for put-backs. He can handle the ball a bit and has a nice floater in the lane. He’s able to draw contact and finish while getting to the free-throw line.
