The event will last two days, but there were some players who already turned some heads right away. Here’s a quick look at some of the top talent from the Class of 2024 that stood out on Day 1.
1. Dedan Thomas Jr. – Liberty (NV)
Thomas was playing up with the 2022s on West Coast Select, and he showed why he’s considered one of the top point guard prospects in his class. He can break down the defense off the dribble and get to the rim. He’s able to draw contact and he can get to the free-throw line. He’s a good ball-handler against pressure. Pushes the pace well and gets out in transition. He keeps his head up and delivers on-point passes to teammates running the break. Can find shooters too off dribble penetration.
2. Xiare Delong – Mojave (CA)
Delong is a little bit methodical in his movement, but he’s effective and he gets the job done. He’s a very strong player who uses his body well. He keeps himself under control and can finish strong at the rim. He can finish through contact and he can draw fouls and get himself to the free-throw line. He’s aggressive and decisive on the offensive end; he puts a lot of pressure on the defense with his ability around the rim. He gets position well in the paint but also can make a move off the dribble.
3. Deshawn Gory – Adelanto (CA)
Gory has some very high defensive upside. He’s got good length and uses it well to contest shots in the paint. He plays the passing lanes well and can cause turnovers that lead to him getting transition scoring opportunities. Good on-ball defense that can really bother opposing players. Offensively, he can handle the ball a little bit on the break. He’s got range out to three and does a good job in getting himself free for a shot. He’s also active around the rim and on the glass.
4. Miles Macpherson – Napa (CA)
Macpherson is probably going to end up being a one of those versatile players who can play on the wing and in the post. Right now as a freshman, he’s playing more in the paint. He’s a good rebounder, especially on the offensive end. He can pass well out of the post when facing defensive pressure. He handles the ball on the break and runs the floor well without the ball. He also makes good cuts to the rim off ball and has good hands. He can finish strong at the rim and he goes right back up after getting a rebound.
