College Commitment: Jarrett Bryant (2021 South Eugene)
If South Eugene is to have success in 2021, a lot will rest on the shoulders of Jarrett Bryant Jarrett Bryant 6'4" | SF South Eugene | 2021 State OR . The 6-foot-3 wing largely played a supporting role as a junior but he’s ready to step up his game. Bryant does so as a committed college recruit as well as he recently signed with Bushnell, a choice that was a slam dunk for him.
“Firstly, I love the basketball program of course,” Bryant said. “The coaches are great and the players are welcoming. The academics have my major, business marketing, and of course I received a scholarship there and it’s close to home so that made it pretty easy.”
Bryant was looking at options such as Linfield and George Fox before deciding on Bushnell. He likes the fit on the basketball floor and how things are planned out for him on the court.
“I think my initial plan is to really be a presence on the defensive side of the ball,” Bryant said. “Based on their style of play, which is fluid and similar to South Eugene, I should be able to quickly slide into my role and make a difference on both sides of the court.”
Last season, Bryant played a versatile role with the Axe, averaging 6.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 steals. He hopes to bring the same to the table at Bushnell and is working hard on getting ready for the college level.
“I can bring the ball down, slash to the basket, distribute and knock down a three,” Bryant said. “Defensively, I believe I can match up well against both guard positions and a small or strong forward if necessary. I need to continue to get stronger, raise my shooting percentage and adjust to the speed of the game.”
As far as the Axe goes this year, Bryant is hopeful. “We lost most of our seniors to graduation last year so we have a lot of underclassmen,” Bryant said. “If we can manage to stay close, we can have a chance to win. But defense and transition baskets will be our key to success.”
Bryant currently ranks as the #58 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
