Red Oak vs Forgan
Forgan was ranked #20 following the conclusion of the regular season, and I have no clue how. This is a team that flew under the radar all season long. Kobe McGowan is a true star that finished the game with 22 points. He did everything well. He threw up an electric alley-oop to his brother, Jordan McGowan, who complimented Kobe well and was a star in his role. Cole Nix knocked down a few threes for Red Oak but it just wasn’t enough. Red Oak ran a zone defense and during halftime, Varnum was able to figure it out. Credit to the coaching staff and players for figuring it out and finishing the game strong. Forgan continued their impressive playoff run as a true Cinderella story behind their high powered brother duo with a 59-37 win.
Varnum vs Mt. View-Gotebo
Martell Davis, Varnum’s star player, took longer than usual to get going but he finished strong. MVG was doing a great job not letting him get to the rim, as they were well aware of his finishing ability. In the first half, MVG did everything right to hang around and stay in the ball game, including big shots from Dalton Belcher. Once Varnum got ahold of the lead in the second half, though, it was too late for MVG to fight back. Varnum started the half on a 19-4, thanks in part to nice post moves from Cordell King and an abundance of energy and leadership from Lance Nutt. Hats of to Mt. View-Gotebo for their effort and competitiveness in this game. Varnum hasn’t been challenged by many Class B teams and MVG did not roll over. Varnum’s lineups of all seniors was too much, though, and they are still gold ball chasing after a 54-40 win.
