The DMV area is known as one of if not the best area for high school basketball in the country, and has some of the most storied programs in some of the most storied conferences, particularly the WCAC. However, as guys like Darren Buchanan show, there are tons of players at schools outside of the private school powerhouses as well.
Buchanan was a freshman on a very talented Wilson team that put five guys in division one basketball in just one class a few years ago, and now he’s taken the reigns at Wilson and has become the next big time prospect out of the public school in West DC. The 6’5” wing is an absolute competitor, and he said he came into the CBG East Coast Elite 24 Camp just looking to compete with the best.
“I just want to get better and love the opportunity to play against some of the best players on the east coast,” Buchanan said. “It will be fun for me to see how my game matches up. The main thing is just to come have fun and compete with these guys.”
As versatile as they come, Buchanan has a mix of strength, athleticism and skill set that makes him a walking mismatch in a number of ways. He’s a great teammate and very coachable kid that will do whatever it takes to help his team win, and he brought that same versatility and unselfishness to the camp which made him a big time standout on both ends of the floor.
He is already considered one of the top prospects in the DMV area, and has an offer sheet to show it with offers from schools in the Big East, Big 10 and the very top of the A10 as well. He says he’s also been hearing recently from Georgia, Georgia State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia, among others.
“It’s starting to pick up a little bit, and hopefully if I just keep working and getting better it will pick up more.”
With an already impressive list, Buchanan says he’s not looking to make a decision any time soon. He says he wants to be patient and see who else will recruit him, and he just wants to focus on his game and getting better moving forward.
“Right now I’m considering all of the schools, I want to wait until the visiting period when that starts so I can go out and see which schools I like the most and will likely make a decision following my senior season.”
While Buchanan says he’s open to all schools, he did mention in particular Xavier, Rutgers, Seton Hall and GW as schools that he is very interested in visiting. That list will likely continue to grow as he will continue to see his offer list grow moving forward.
Coaches, Buchanan will be playing with Team Durant on the EYBL Circuit this year, and is part of a very talented group that will be a no brainer to check out moving forward.
